I spend very little on beauty products. I have never gotten my nails done or dyed my hair. I get my long hair trimmed 1-2 times per year, it's straight and requires very little maintenance. If I'm going to put on some makeup I just do a light powder foundation, mascara, and chapstick. I haven't gone down the botox or other facial treatment road yet (I'm 40, so I am considering).
The number 1 thing I do to feel confident in my looks is regular sweaty exercise. I think a healthy glow and toned body from exercising and eating reasonably well beats spending money on hair, makeup, and nails every time. I usually exercise on my own, so that's free. |

What I do now:
1. Sensitive skincare and sunscreen products at La Roche-Posay, $100/mo. 2 .Henna and indigo dyes at home, $10/mo. 3. Nice shampoo/conditioner, $50/mo. 4. Free haircut by husband. I have a bunch of Dior/Chanel make-up that I never use and is all expired. But since I don't use it and have stored it correctlu, it hasn't gone bad or anything. My daughter sometimes uses it for face painting. Occasionally for parties I will put on some eye shadow and mascara/eyeliner, and lipgloss, but I hate foundation and real lipstick, and don't need blush. Nail polish lasts for ever, because I don't usually wear any. I'm lucky to have great natural nails and skin. |
PS, after a few years without coloring I did just start again, but I use home semipermanent color (Clairol) that is maybe $8/box (2 uses since my hair is so short). I only got back into it because I felt my grey was being held against me in employment. |
Agree, makes me feel good about with how little I can look great! |

As a river nymph I don't even know what this so-called "makeup" is. Do you humans not also simply rinse your hair in the clear cold sea, and have rare seaweeds dabbed on your clear, lush skin?

Spending all that money on the exterior but can’t do anything about the ugly inside that feeds the superiority complex lol. |
OP here and I love this, would love recs for how to keep your hair luxurious even with constant exposure to salt water. I assume it has to do with a blessing bestowed by Achelous, the river god. Are you related to his children, the sirens? They must have good beauty tips. |

OP here and great recommendations so far. I will definitely be exploring drugstore makeup but any good dupe recommendations, especially for tinted moisturizer, mascara, and brow gel would be great.
Also, I am very into facial oils. My favorite are from Herbivore Botanicals and not insanely expensive but not cheap. Anyone know of cheaper ones that are still good quality? I love how they make my skin feel and as I've gotten older I find they really help with skin texture. Would love to find alternatives that aren't quite so spendy. |
Ah, OP - it is the brackish water that makes a river nymph's hair shine and bounce. You need the mild and the salty in your life, and your hair needs it as well. Too much of one or the other, and life and your tresses will hang limp. No but seriously - it's probably hard to say right now what you can cut back on and still feel happy. Today, I feel like I might literally die if I had to stop using my Skinceuticals CE - but if I had to cut back I'd probably start experimenting with the much less expensive versions until I found one that worked well enough for me. So that's what I'd do in your situation. See if you're happy doing your own nails; if not, then start trying out the less expensive nail places. Try out a dupe shampoo from what you usually use, see if it works. See if you can stretch it by using less. Etc. I spend $ on skincare but virtually nothing on makeup so that one would be easy for me. I only use mascara and that's like $24 every three months - seems doable, but if I wanted to spend less I'd try out some cheaper brands. Then probably waste a ton of money on that experiment before deciding that it is perfectly reasonable to spend $24 every three months on frigging mascara. Anyway - good luck saving for a house. That's exciting! |

I spend approximately:
$100 2x per year on haircuts ($80 plus tips) $30 2x per year for pedicures, but could easily skip if money were tight. I just like the experience of going (massage chairs! Get pampered!) $2 a bottle on drugstore shampoo $5 a bottle on drugstore hair conditioner. $1 a bottle on drugstore body wash $3 a bottle on drugstore lotion for my legs in the winter (they get really dry, a bottle lasts me all winter) $8 a bottle on drugstore sunscreen. Prob 2 bottles a year End of list. If you want a house, skip the makeup! What a waste of time and money. |
| OP, how old are you? At 45 I'm spending more than I did 10 years ago. Started Botox and plan to continue. Need a really great colorist to do highlights who can kind of blend over the gray hair when they grow out and it's very expensive. Stuff that 10 years ago wouldn't have mattered, but at this age really makes a difference. |
What drugstore do you shop at?? I haven’t seen prices that low on shampoo, conditioner etc. in a very, very long time at my local drugstores or grocery stores or even Walmart. |

I spend about $100 a year on hair, $30 a year on make-up, and $30 a year on products.
So $200 a year I would say. |
