NP. We buy Starbuck's Espresso whole beans dark roast. I am looking at Mayorga online. Can someone suggest which would be closest to the Starbuck's espresso. I like the notes of chocolate and caramel, but agree it tastes over roasted. We are new to grinding beans. We used pods for years, so you can imagine even Starbuck's beans is a step up!
From the descriptions it looks like the Cubano vs the Very Dark Roast would be closer?? |

If you're in the McLean area, try this one:

I can't answer your q about what's like the starbucks, but Cubano is what Costco carries and the only Mayorga I've tried and it's good. |

The only thing darker than French Roast is Italian Roast. Both will have an over-roasted/burned taste.
Major Dickinson's is a medium-dark roast. Not bad. Mayorga is okay. If you shop at Costco keep an eye out for their "small batch" (for Costco) offerings. Last year they had a fantastic Peruvian and a pretty good Mexico. I just picked up the Ethiopian but haven't cracked into it yet. Probably next week. Like the other poster said, it's in the freezer until then. |

Oh, another point... Starbucks and most mass-market brands will tend towards medium-dark and dark roasts, because the longer you roast a bean the more of the "terroir" or individuality you roast out of it.
If you're Starbucks and you want Every Cup to Taste the Same then you're going to server darker roasts to ensure that consistency. Last week I was served a Starbucks Reserve Ethiopian and the description talked about the farm and the processing and all that, but then it was a medium-dark roast (not surprising) and there wasn't much individuality left in the bean. lol Lighter roasts will have much more variation between offerings & bags and learning what [varietals / processing technique / growing regions] you like can be a fun journey. |
| Sometimes you'll see a roaster with the same bean and one says "Espresso roast." That just means it's been roasted a bit darker. It doesn't mean it's only suitable for use in espresso. |
| ^^the same bean listed more than once. |
| La Colombe All Dark or Corsica |
| Shockingly, trader Joe |
| Starbucks dark roast is on sale right now at Costco. 13.50 for 2.5 lbs |

I like Zeke's Tell Tale Dark. Can sometimes get it at a local farmers market, but I usually order it online.
Mayorga Cafe Cubano is my second choice. |
| Pete's major dick or Starbucks Sumatra |
These are my favorites too. Pretty used to be special mail order coffee. I still love it! |
Trader Joe's is great for a lot of things, but coffee has not been one of them. Although somebody else recently commented that they had a new good whole-bean; I'd be open to trying it I suppose. |
I'm loving the new Ethiopian one they have. It's not a dark roast though. |
