MLS Next Flex Tournament at Soccerplex

I'm a local Referee who see all leagues and teams from a neutral angle

I saw some U15 MLS Academy players this weekend at forward, defenders and wingers with speed, size, skill and power that cannot be stopped or beaten 1v1 by most

Why is this the first response? I found OP’s post very helpful. It’s one data point and it did not appear to be a blanket generalization, unlike the rest of DCUM posts.

I took my ECNL boys to an MLSN event and found out they were better. Thats what he said in one sentence. Please tell me how that is helpful? I could haved railed on OP about being dumb which I didnt, or ignorant which I kinda did from the standpoint of their obvious privilige, what's the problem? Need a trigger warning next time?

You're angry because they relayed an experience based on specifics?

You're obviously the dunce dumb ignorant moron for not realizing the OP was telling of a specific direct experience.
Not just repeating a generalization that you believe in your shallow opinion.

They are good players on a decent ECNL team

They all honestly and humbly agreed, none of them could hang in the games we saw based on the speed of play, technical skills and physicality

It was eye opening for me to see the differences between kids of the same age

Not every MLS next team was there. The teams that didn't make it are not far off from top ECNL teams. Also, some ECNL boys teams can compete with the best MLS next teams.

Some being the operative word. My DC had the same thoughts. Speed.

We were only able to afford travel sports somewhat recently and our older kids are still in elementary school, so yes, I suppose I am ignorant, and I guess if NOT being McMansion-rich and raising toddlers/infants who are too young for ECNL/MLSN is your idea of “privilege” then…perhaps it is YOU who needs a trigger warning whenever a “newbie” posts?

(If you’re wondering why I’m looking at ECNL/MLSN posts when my kids are too young to even be eligible, the oldest one is getting up there and it seems like if you’re “serious” you have to start young).

??? Are ECNL teams generally considered more wealthy than MLSNext? That’s the only way this comment would make sense.

The real academy teams in MLS Next are free to play.

Wealth is not a strong indicator for soccer potential in any country but this one, so ECNL teams likely do have higher incomes to support the pyramid scheme they essentially created themselves to say they are playing in a top tier elite national league. Its just branding, no substance and not a viable comparision with anything happening at the MLSN level. They know you have money, they know they can get it from you for about 7-10 years, and they know better than anyone only a fraction will get the outcome they intended when you jumped on the hamster wheel. But theres always college and the trust fund, so all is well.

Well that I knew, but they’re not like need-based admissions, right? Wasn’t Barron Trump in DC United’s academy?

MLS Academy teams /players (ie Philly/DCU) is a very different beast than MLS Next teams (Bethesda, Alexandria, Achilles etc). Academy are the best of the best. They don’t pay to play. Next does.

Top ECNL teams are competitive with Next and have proven so in head to head competitions. Neither is competitive against Academy—There are some exceptions of course

Just like ECNL, MLS has expanded their pyramid scheme into Next and even Next 2- whatever that means.
The weak/bottom of the bracket ECNL teams cant compete with the strong Next teams and vice versa as one might imagine.

He was in the old version of the Academy before MLS Next and before it was free.
