P if you're just staying the night, we stayed basically on site. They have a bunch of Frank Lloyd wright homes that they rent out per night.
I think it was called polymath Park |
In defense of my husband, LOL, Kentuck Knob is a much less exciting house than Fallingwater. Some rooms are quite small and crowded to view. To me the highlight was the Princess Diana autographed picture in her black "divorce revenge" dress on a bedroom dresser. I think there were age restrictions and our kids were not allowed inside at all based on age. I agree that there is little inside Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater to interest the averagely intellectual child. If you are architects, you may indeed have better luck. I thought Fallingwater's interior was pretty boring when I was a high school senior. Because, due to its radical 1930s design sensibilities, it looked rather like 1960s mass & motel architecture from my childhood in California. I'm glad your children are into it. The Lego set is very cool. Enjoy your trip! |
We did a visit to Fallingwater while staying at Nemacolin but left our 5 and 8 kids at the kids club there while we went on the tour and everyone was happy. It wouldn’t have been an option to take our younger child anyway since the age limit for Fallingwater was I think 7 and up but, while our 8 year old daughter is very well behaved and would have been fine, she definitely had a much better time swimming, bowling and viewing animals with kids her own age rather than trailing around on an adult centric tour. |
+1 to all of this. |
Our 7 and 10 year olds, who are easily entertained by gardens and historical places, were bored out of their minds at fallingwater. Maybe yours will feel differently.
What they did LOVE was the ~4 hours we spent in Ohiopyle (which is nearby). It was a nice day, very scenic little river town, the kids could wade into the river (but at that age we went in too, for safety). Had lunch, got ice cream, went for a short hike. Everyone commented how fun that was in comparison to fallingwater. Frankly, one day at deep creek seems underwhelming unless you've booked a boat rental. I wouldn't expect a lot from fallingwater, or plan an entire day/night around it. I would base camp at Deep Creek and just drive out to do the fallingwater tour, then go back. Maybe stop in Ohiopyle for lunch and ice cream. |
So cute this post brought you two together! But what if you talk about it at dinner, and it turns out it wasn't your spouse posting. There's a doppleganger DC family out there... |
PP, I just checked. Must be at least 6 to get into Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. At some architectural house tours we wanted to go on it was 8 years old.
Looks like the age limit was removed on Farnsworth House! Again - strongly recommend the Andy Warhol museum for art-minded kids. Also there are some Monet water lilies at the Carnegie in Oakland. Plus cool dinosaurs (arguably nicer than Smithsonian due to lower attendance). |
OK this is awesome |
When my kids were that age, we would spend Memorial Day weekend at Seven Springs. Once - one of my kids had to be 7 or 8 - we took them to Fallingwater. They were fine so just know your kids.
I remember as a young kid - again, I’m guessing around age 8 - I remember my grandparents also taking me to Fallingwater. Seven Springs may not be as fancy as Nemacolin but your kids will enjoy it. Especially the alpine slide. https://www.7springs.com/explore-the-resort/activities-and-events/summer-activities.aspx |
We stayed at Nemacolin. Kids were about the same age as yours and they were fine. We did the kids club for dinner one night and they loved it. Good idea if your kids are likely to be bored. |
No such thing as something nice near. Stayed at a place near year ago and it was haunted like and creepy and bizarre. Get out it that area when you are done and get closer to civilization. |
PP. I shared DCUM with my husband a few months ago and away he went, LOL. For sure it's him. Very specific info about switching off kids at Kentuck Knob. Few people are nerdy enough to to switch off caring for a baby and toddler onsite at an obscure Frank Lloyd Wright House tour. I usually tell him what threads I HAVEN'T posted in, LOL. |
Guys OP said her kids *want* to go to Fallingwater. |
We stayed at a chain hotel in Somerset. The highlight was it was the location of the high school prom. It was fine is you just want to rest your head.
Pittsburgh would be good if you're doing a day trip. The tour at Fallingwater was heavy on architecture. Do they have kid friendly tours? |
Where did op allegedly say this? |
