VA man haggles with dealer

From the video, I don’t understand why they were discussing financing, when the customer made it clear he was paying cash (two checks + $4000 credit card swipe).

The "adjustment" is due to supply and demand? So if I buy canned pumpkin when it's in stock during a shortage, the Giant should make a "price adjustment" for me to pay more?

If there is shortage of canned pumpkins Giant won’t have them in stock but you could find them for triple the price on eBay. That is how markets work friend.

This dealer does have the item in stock.

Dealer was offering a better APR which would save him $800

More importantly, dealers get a kickback from the finance company for writing car loans.

He’s not a moron at all. He went in. Seemed prepared. Humored the staff. Appears to have gotten his target price or close to it. Did he overpay? Probably. But he decided to do that.

I am sure he did his homework and knew what the rock bottom otd price was.

FYI all car buyers: The Maryland "processing fee" is NOT required by law:

Record them. If they tell you it’s required by law, when they call you the next day to beg you to give a good review to the manufacturer, tell them it will cost 150% of their low. If not, small claims court for treble the amount. Them saying a charge is required by law should be enough for consumer fraud to apply

When is DOJ going to go after dealerships for antitrust violations? They took down the realtors. Pls focus on car dealerships next!

They added a two thousand dollar dealer markup (even though they had a dozen of that model on the lot, so not high demand). Plus $1300 in some b.s. fees. Plus they didn’t give me the $1000 Toyota incentive being offered for the model. So basically started almost $4500 above a reasonable amount. Probably figuring that I’d be happy paying MSPR plus their stupid fees. But I knew that recent sales were trending $3000 below MSPR. So I went someplace else that had a lot less b.s. and got the price I wanted.

Toyota corporate is famous for this crap. I love the cars but hate the company culture so much that I’m eyeing Hondas next.

This.

If you can pay cash for a Toyota around here without paying a dealer surcharge please post that video! Even if it’s not here. I’ll find it elsewhere.

You can turn around and immediately pay off the loan. We did that and got a furious call from the Honda dealer claiming they lost money on the sale because of that.

Before COVID, I was shopping for a Toyota. One dealer said they had a car in stock and gave me an out the door price via email and then when I got to the dealer to do paperwork they raised the price and explained it was because they actually had to get the car from another dealer and then had the audacity to say that if I’d just come in person and not tried to negotiate by email this could have been sorted out much easier.

Another Toyota dealer “forgot to add” sales tax for their out the door price.

And so many other similar problems. And the sales people are shameless. They’ll say anything to you to get you to the dealer and then dick around. Of course you leave right away, but that doesn’t get you any closer to getting a car.

It’s sort of hilarious if it weren’t so infuriating.

One good reason to just buy used. Dealers have to move the inventory they have on hand, there are games but they aren’t quite as bad.

So you pay MSRP and think it was easy. You can do that at any dealer, but somehow "that’s different"
