Darcars Toyota Silver Spring just tried to pull this with me. They added a two thousand dollar dealer markup (even though they had a dozen of that model on the lot, so not high demand). Plus $1300 in some b.s. fees. Plus they didn’t give me the $1000 Toyota incentive being offered for the model. So basically started almost $4500 above a reasonable amount. Probably figuring that I’d be happy paying MSPR plus their stupid fees. But I knew that recent sales were trending $3000 below MSPR. So I went someplace else that had a lot less b.s. and got the price I wanted.
Toyota corporate is famous for this crap. I love the cars but hate the company culture so much that I’m eyeing Hondas next.
Before COVID, I was shopping for a Toyota. One dealer said they had a car in stock and gave me an out the door price via email and then when I got to the dealer to do paperwork they raised the price and explained it was because they actually had to get the car from another dealer and then had the audacity to say that if I’d just come in person and not tried to negotiate by email this could have been sorted out much easier. Another Toyota dealer “forgot to add” sales tax for their out the door price. And so many other similar problems. And the sales people are shameless. They’ll say anything to you to get you to the dealer and then dick around. Of course you leave right away, but that doesn’t get you any closer to getting a car. It’s sort of hilarious if it weren’t so infuriating. One good reason to just buy used. Dealers have to move the inventory they have on hand, there are games but they aren’t quite as bad.
