Half these posts are totally assine. I'm guess they're from the gas station with broken pumps and are too cheap to fix the issue. Even with the pump in your hand it's supposed to shut off that's a built in safety feature of it. This has nothing to do with being lazy or calculating how much you tank holds literally no one does that. You put the pump in and hold it or lock it into place and it stops when full. They make them like this for a reason.

the auto-shutoff is triggered by the gas vapors coming up the fill port, if the nozzle isn't seated properly the shutoff may not work correctly. however, you can literally hear the sound change as the gas fills up the tank and gets close to full, and you can manually shut off the pump before it overflows. shutoffs didn't reliably exist in the 80s, in some cases you had to hold the nozzle down the entire time. |
