[/quote] the auto-shutoff is triggered by the gas vapors coming up the fill port, if the nozzle isn't seated properly the shutoff may not work correctly. however, you can literally hear the sound change as the gas fills up the tank and gets close to full, and you can manually shut off the pump before it overflows. shutoffs didn't reliably exist in the 80s, in some cases you had to hold the nozzle down the entire time.
