Definitely yes at our high school and middle school. Shorter shorts have been popular for at least a year or so.

OP here, this is another point of confusion I have. For the longest time, boys have worn those long, baggy shorts that come to their knees. Now it seems the shorts have to be shorter, but not *too* short. Honestly, it would be easier if they just went back to dressing up!

Yep my boys used to wear the longer basketball type shorts but now wear the shorter ones. The links people posted look about right in terms of the length they like to wear

Because he would rather eat glass than go to the mall. -OP

Sounds like he would rather wear those sweatpants all year. He can’t be clueless and lazy.

My DS and his peers are definitely gravitating toward the shorter shorts. 5 inch inseams are popular with a lot of the guys right now. They sit right around mid-thigh.

I agree with the recommendations above for Dick’s. Lulu is also popular but spendy. My son recently bought these from Target; he swears they are just like the Lululemon version. (And a lot more affordable!)

I posted earlier about being surprised by my son’s legs showing in his 5” shorts. He gets his from Hollister.

Another option that my 9th grader likes because they’re really comfortable:

NP with a son with same vague “requirements” as OP’s son

I like these! They are plain and look shorter than basketball length but not too short, as I am sure my son will have some vague requirement about length, too

Believe it or not, my local Walmart has a bunch of shorts like the ones linked here, in different colors.

I pretty much only get my kid shorts with zippered pickets these days so wallet, phone, and keys don't disappear. He rarely breaks out the basketball length shorts anymore.

Adidas has many options that he likes, though prices are much better at Nat'l Harbor. He wears them for school and then just changes shoes for track. Good deal IMO because I don't have to buy school clothes + workout clothes!

He also has

My teen wears plain black Amazon Essentials athletic shorts. Same brand and style 365 days a year.

back in the 1960's and 1970's most school boys wore very short shorts, 2" inseam was not unusual I think there was a certain sexual aspect to this as boys and girls went to different schools and boys being boys liked to look attractive to other boys - boys will be boys and this defines the shorts that cubs and scouts also wore. at the time personally I still like wearing my rugby shorts with the 2" inseam, I'm not gay but find short shorts cool and comfortable and also find boys in shorts shorts nice to look at.
