Please help me buy shorts for my teen boy

Anonymous
I'm baffled by the "fashion" at DS's public high school, and DS is no help. He'll refuse to wear things, but can't seem to articulate what is ok or not ok to wear, except for no big logos, labels, or words, and no cargo pockets or other adornments. And it can only be black or gray. We've managed with a bunch of sweatpants all winter, but I'm stuck on what kind of shorts to get - most of what I see has a big logo or a bright color on it. Anyone have a go-to short they can recommend, that has the requisite look? He wears a men's medium, if that helps.

You sound like you're describing my teen boy! This might be a good starting point -- Dick Sporting Goods brand shorts. There's different styles but here's one example:

Small black-on-black logo, nothing large or brightly colored.

My high school son wears shorts along these lines (Nike or other dri fit type shorts in a mid length), and most others seem to as well. In various solid colors paired with random tshirts.

+1

These look good OP (if he doesn’t want something with a label). Looks like what a lot of teen boys wear (I have 2). Mine wear similar but prefer the Nike ones

Why cant you take him to the mall and he picks out what he wants?

Those shorts look short. Is that what the kids are wearing these days? Shorter shorts. Boys too?

Definitely yes at our high school and middle school. Shorter shorts have been popular for at least a year or so.

Plenty of choices like these at Kohls.

My son wears shorts with a 5” inseam. After years of wearing longer Under Armour basketball-style shorts, I was shocked to see more of his thighs 🤣

Because he would rather eat glass than go to the mall. -OP
