4th grade girls mocking “preppy” girls

What do they mean when they say preppy?

What is an old goth? Do you all still wear the heavy eye liner, spiked hair and chains on your black jeans into your 50s?

Silly and not a big deal since they weren’t talking about anyone. I guarantee there are bullies targeting certain kids in their class for their clothing. Watch for that and make sure your child doesn’t get involved in any of that.

My sixth grader and friends use preppy as a term of endearment. Like calling each other “preppy prepster.”

I don’t fully understand what they mean but it’s not the green/pink preppy aesthetic of my youth.

According to Bark, an online monitoring company that tracks teenage slang, preppy is “used to refer to a particular aesthetic that involves girly, bright-colored clothes and popular name brands, such as Lululemon and Stanley. It’s very similar to the definition of preppy we grew up with, but slightly more refined and 'basic.'"

Is 'preppy' an insult?

Not across the board.

Like other fashion trends, many embrace the preppy look, while others find it unappealing.

"Today, a girl walks up to me and she said that my fit (outfit) was so 'Preppy Nation.' That I was looking preppy," said Mr. Lindsay in another TikTok video.

Lindsay gestured to the Christmas sweater he was wearing, explaining, "This does not fall into my definition of preppy."

He added, "Now, I've heard it used as both kind of an insult like — 'Oh my gosh, that's so preppy' or 'That's Preppy Nation,'" he said. "But I also hear them using it as like, a compliment: 'Oh, that fit is Preppy Nation' or 'Oh, it's preppy in here.'"

From my understanding it is the new term for what used to be called “basic”

Think Stanley Cups and lululemon clothes all the time, into luxury trendy skincare and/or makeup

This isn’t my middle school daughter, but I’ve never heard her or anyone making fun of them.

I have no idea what the male version of preppy now is

I can't believe OP called the mom "old goth". WTF is old goth?

OP, you are a mean girl and you are raising a mean girl. You enjoy listening to 4th grade gossip.

Grow up, OP.

My middle school aged nieces do this too and also use it as a compliment, i.e. “That dress is so preppy!” This is their way of saying “That dress is so cute/pretty;” the dress wouldn’t necessarily meet the traditional criteria for preppiness. It seems “preppy” is a compliment/term of aspiration, not the old-school preppy. And the “preppy” girls are the cool girls.

Most of the mean girls I knew/know had mean moms. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

We exist.

No heavy eyeliner, spiked hair, or chains on black jeans here (I never wore jeans at all). But I am wearing a Sisters of Mercy tshirt, and Cuts You Up is playing in the background as I surf around on here.

At my DDs prep schools the kids literally embody the preppy look. I see no problem with it and no one makes fun of it because it's everywhere. They do make fun of kids with poor hygiene- and I normally stop that with "you don't know what's going on at home or in the background. There must be a reason for it and it's not your business. Be kind!".
