Arlington Girls - I know several coaches offer private but never heard any story about anyone feeling pressure whatsoever.
The boys side - some rumor for the top team but it seems kids who are standout aren’t affected by this whatsoever |

ARL parent here. I’ve never heard of this and I think it sounds like the kind of thing that is normal in developing countries struggling with corruption lol. We definitely have some coaches who offer private or small group lessons, especially during the summer. But have never heard of being pressured or forced into it, and definitely not as an “unspoken requirement” for favorable treatment.
FWIW, I know it’s prohibited for teachers at DCs’ old Spanish daycare/preschool to do private lessons or babysiting on the side for anyone, but I think most of them do it, or have done it, anyway. I don’t think that’s as bad though, since at that age there’s no tests, grades, “top team” or “bottom team”, etc. Maybe just more happy face stickers hahaha. |
This. Also check Team Manager. Generally PP whose kid who is bubble material (or less) volunteer as manager. Some do both. Sad. |
The coaches do not like if you train out side the club. That is money that should be going to their pockets. Also they do not want you kid to see pickup bad habits like seeing the field, technical skills, passing the ball, etc. |
I'm so confused by this post. What? |
| Some coaches want to do it for free too. They want better players, better teams, and success stories. It is especially true with athletic kids who need a lot of skill development. |
When looking around, ask how they feel about outside training. Our coach didn’t mind so much, but the Tech Director acted smug once he figured we wouldn’t be signing up for his joke of a futsal clinic again. Then my player got demoted the following year. It have been coincidental, but we got the sense that training outside the club was frowned upon by the TD and head coach. |
| This screams SYC! |
Lol, yes |

I don’t understand. Why are people telling their coach(es) if their DC is doing anything outside of the club?
There are players that do private training all of the time. There are also players that do individual skills and strength training on their own at home. None of this is any business of the coach. |
I've heard of coaches telling parents they don't want their players getting outside help when it's brought up and they listened. They were stupid and misunderstood. The coach meant outside help that wasn't their futsal clinics.. ...guess who's kids got demoted for lack of progress over this season? Hint: it wasn't the ones getting outside privates/doing supplementals and the ones that bumped up did LOTS of futsal. |
Unless directed otherwise, I'm pretty sure my kids would mention to coaches themselves. |
| My son had private training with another coach at his club (not his age group). That person became more than a trainer, he was a mentor and played an enormous role in his life. I didn't see that coming, but what a blessing it has been for him. |

He explains very well. As a person who played in academy in Europe I can say it does not make much sense what I can see here in DC Area. Youth soccer should be about kids development but instead adults make money and parents are entertained on weekends. As a result I can see lots of "wasted" talented kids. And yes, the USA has lots of talented kids but the system fail them. |
| Rampant at Stoddert travel. One of boys coaches moved to McLean and same practice there. |
