Moped to commute from Spring Valley to Tysons?

If I was commuting to Tyson's without a car from Spring Valley....
public transportation is your answer.
bus from Mass to Farragut - metro to Tysons

Even Spring Valley to downtown DC on a moped is sketchy. Lots of fast moving vehicles on Mass Ave, with quick-turning traffic onto Mass Ave that won't see a moped.

SV to Tysons is literally insane.

Your nephew needs to build in time for the long commute. If you want to be nice, drop him off at the Tenleytown metro station each morning. He can take Red Line to the Silver Line. It will be a good introduction to real life commuting-adulting and teach him the importance of living close to work.

You may also want to post on your neighborhood listserv and see if anyone is willing to carpool with him. I bet there is someone in the neighborhood who works there and drives in daily.

Moped to the metro...It is not a great metro ride from Spring Valley to Tysons unfortunately.

If he somehow wants to go through with some form of motored bike, tell him he's basically dead meat on these roads unless you're on at least a mid range powered motorcycle. You'll have distracted/angry drivers swerving into you all the time and speed is the only thing that will save your life most of the time.

Ah - that said, I used to commute from reston to washington DC on an ebike on the trails. So renting one of those is a possibility.

Are electric bikes allowed on the Custis / W&OD trails? Down McArthur Blvd, to Key Bridge, then out the trails to Dunn Loring, where there is a "secret" connector to Tysons Corner.

I'm not actually sure, and I couldn't find anything. That said, I used common sense and was riding a pedal assist, not some of the higher powered ungoverned throttle based bikes. Half the time I had regular cyclists just ride behind me as I was breaking wind for them. It just allowed me to put some extra work stuff in panniers, flatten the hills, and make it a more comfortable long ride.

NOT SAFE AT ALL. Hard no.

People DO use eBikes on the W&OD and other trails, but it’s definitely, positively 100% illegal. Trail rules *specifically* mention “NO motorized vehicles”. And an eBike is clearly a motorized vehicle.

I hope anyone using an eBike on the trail gets ticketed and has their bike confiscated by the police and disposed of.

Mopeds in the U.S. are suicidal. They can't keep up with traffic and are too underpowered to accelerate quickly when danger looms. A motorcycle could work, if the rider is skilled and prepared for foul weather, but commuting on one is not exactly safe, either since the bike will always come out worse in any collision with a car, truck, or bus.

Metro is the only rational option. Or a short-term rental within walking distance of C1 in Tyson's.

lol. E-bikes aren’t motorized vehicles. If you’re not pedaling they’re not moving. Maybe you’re thinking of something called a MOTORcycle, which, as you guessed is MOTORIZED…. And virtually unheard of on w&od.
