Wow go DCI teachers! |
|
This is a very weird take |
Yikes! |
Uh, I think there is some garbling of cause and effect and the timeline here. There were issues that needed to be addressed. Teachers were frustrated that their voices weren't being heard. The teachers unionized. There still are issues that need to be addressed. Teachers have left along the way. In no way did the problems and teacher departures happen BECAUSE of the unionization. Some teachers stuck it out longer than they might have otherwise in hopes of faster improvement after unionization. Just wanted to clarify that point in case people get the wrong impression of what happened. |
Parent of a former MV student here... my son's teachers at the Cook campus were a revolving door from PK to 5th grade- union or no union - the retention rate of 50% the poster mentions was felt my son and our family. He's not experienced this turnover at DCI this year as a 6th grader- but I can speak from experience when I say that the MV Cook Campus was unstable in many ways - from leadership to teachers. I only seriously hope that this does not mean that DCI will experience and exodus of leaders - we've found the MS principal and AP to be respectful, responsive and cheerleaders for kids. |
So much spin in this thread. MV Cook teachers are leaving because the leadership has been ineffective in addressing both teachers and parents' concerns. To claim that teachers are leaving because of the union is absurd -- teachers are leaving because school leaders have lacked transparency and communication and have done little to address the problems there. In this case the union and parents are aligned in what they are asking of school administrators there: protections, accountability, transparency, and communication.

Are you staying there are ongoing concerns. And having a union has not had any impact on addressing the concerns? |
didnt we learn during the pandemic that the teachers union will throw your child under the bus without a second thought? |
MV parent here. the administration, led by the executive director, has been woeful. Glad the ED is leaving. Post unionization MV teachers seem more supported...and hopefully, now that ED is going, positive changes can continue to happen. My student will be attending DCI and i'm happy the teachers there unionized, sounds like the schools faced/face similar issues. |
Former MV parent, current DCI parent. Thankfully, at least as far as I can tell, the situation is nowhere near as bad at DCI. Kids are so much happier. Communication is so much better. Perfect? No. But night and day difference. |
I'm so impressed by the dedication of teachers at DCI! Over 70% of them signed a petition to unionize, showing real commitment to the school. I saw the video of them delivering the petition, and I was proud to recognize so many wonderful teachers who taught my own child. If you're interested in supporting them, you can follow their journey on Instagram.

We learned that, like police unions, teachers unions are kind of evil. |
The ED of MV is leaving? Are you sure? |
Do you understand how unions work? They cannot unilaterally make administrators that are bad at their jobs perform better at their jobs... obviously? Many in this thread have suggested that the existence of the Union itself has made teachers worse off, or pushed them to leave their jobs. This is not the case. |
