Why is it so hard to find work

Have you considered driving for Uber?

OP, you will get no sympathy here. I am guessing you had a white collar job and your husband currently has one. Could you do freelance consulting work? I’m not sure what you mean by meaningful, but I’m going to assume you mean a job where you can apply yourself, use your brain, do high quality work, and make money. I may be totally off! I thi i you need to start networking and putting out there what you are looking for. I actually know multiple people who have such gigs. One is a freelancer, another is a consultant who works on small contracts, another works in finance for a small business. None of these jobs were listed— just networking and looking for companies with lots of working moms. I do agree that there is so much wasted potential by making it so hard to find flexible jobs but literally no one who works is sympathetic about this so don’t expect that. You will have to create your own unicorn opportunity.

Me, a person we works full time at less than $200k a year: 😂 😂 😂

Same! This is a great post! I’m 20 years into my career and I have advanced degrees. I still haven’t hit 6 figures! Wow, that poster is not grounded in reality.

Same here. Never change, DCUM!

+1 I did this when my kids were babies-preschool. Regular project work for former employers/colleagues. Once I let a few people know I was available I never had to put in any effort to drum up work. And could show a continuous resume when applying to go back to FT when youngest was in kindergarten.

🙄 Many of us are at our under $200K full-time jobs today, but thanks for the laugh.

Many of us are COUPLES making less than $200k with TWO full time jobs even.

Do you live in the DMV. Maybe you could say what you do / what degrees you have if you’d like to crowdsource how you can make more $$. Advanced degrees and not yet $100k after 20 years seems surprising— there are probably ways you can use your skills to make more!

Yes, DMV. Teacher with 2 masters (neither in education)

I’m sure I can use my skills to make more, but I’m good at what I do so I guess I’ll keep doing it.

I don’t need benefits or seniority. I would be fine making like 25k. I don’t need the money, just somewhat meaningful work that doesn’t take up my entire waking life.

Most businesses have their busy hours form 1-5pm. Both Dh and I (separate industries) are absolutely slammed from 1-5. The morning hours are just catch up and slow.

I too wish I could end at 2pm. I could end by 3:30 but it wouldn’t matter since the schools end at 2:10. Ridiculous time.

Ok for 25k nearly any part time job would make that. Is there a store you’d like to work at?

Anonymous wrote:I want to do somewhat meaningful work but only work limited hours, like 9am-2pm. It is so hard to find part time work and every other position seems like volunteer work. I don’t want to work retail. Why is it so hard to find? I understand why so many SAHP resort to charity and committee work.

My solution to this is work smart + find a job that’s remote and does not have a micromanager as your supervisor. On paper I have a full time job, but I rarely work more than 4-5 hours a day. And because my supervisor does not micromanage, I can block off my calendar in advance and only schedule meetings from 9-2. Most Fridays I block off entirely. I make sure the quality of my work is excellent and have not had an issue with essentially working part-time for going on a couple of years now.

I am so glad this post is getting dragged. I wouldn’t put it past DCUM to take it seriously. “Yeah just a lil $200K side hustle”

Your local public schools are most definitely hiring and fit your requirement for working hours. Start there.
