This. Be a normal kid. If he develops a true passion for some academic field, he can do some research and figure out if there are any opportunities for a junior or senior.

OP lives in a college town, that's different from having a relative or family friend who runs a lab like most of the 9th grade or younger students getting real research opportunities

Depending on DCs interest, my kids enjoyed AEOP and know several who did SEAP
