| DS is a freshman and would love to get an internship at our state university (we live in a college town). However, his school doesn't have any programs that connect kids with professors, or anything like that. Should he cold-email a bunch of professors? It seems likely that they will all reject him given he has no prior research experience. We don't have any connections. How should he go about doing this? |

Not “a bunch” of professors. But targeted ones that teach and do research in an area your DS is interested in. Does the college career services post research positions?

| High school freshman? College freshman? |
HS! |
| A high school freshman isn’t going to be a useful intern or research assistant to a college professor. Even college freshmen have a tough time getting those gigs. But there are tons of more educationally/developmentally appropriate things your 14/15 year old CAN and should do at this age - work, volunteer, school based clubs that can offer leadership opportunities etc |
| No one is going to want a HS freshman. Sorry. |
| Why start a new internship thread when one originated just 2 hours prior? |
| Some schools do have opportunities (internships, research). specifically targeting high schoolers. I think UMD has this. But not completely sure. |
| Please- let your HS freshman be a kid, don’t try to pad a resume for an Ivy League school. If they want a job let them mow lawns or scoop ice cream |
never heard of it. -umd parent |

Here are two UMD internship programs for high schoolers.
High School Internship Program, Department of Geographical Sciences https://geog.umd.edu/high-school-hub/high-school-internship-program High School Internship, Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research https://www.ibbr.umd.edu/internship-application |
| Which field, OP? I would say plenty of ISEF/STS winners got started in research at 9th grade or younger. |

Good experience to try.
My kid got an informational interview with a professor at Georgetown. It did not lead to a job, but she gave my DD useful career advice. Your kid will just learn how to beat the bushes. |
| NP here: My rising senior has been interning at UMD with a prof, however, is looking for some summer research opportunities. Where can he look? The programs he applied to are still pending results with one acceptance (too far and too expensive to justify) and one rejection. |
| I agree that you should look for Federal programs. Of course it is too late for this year. But my DD landed a very cool internship with the Smithsonian in high school (the 2nd time she applied). |
