Democrats getting a lesson in Economics 101

Rent goes up because Democrats enact rent controls which removes incentive to build more housing.

Material costs go up because of inflation. Inflation caused by printing money and other broken dem policies.

Labor goes up — if you bring value and a company is willing to pay for it. Flipping burgers doesn’t require any skills you can’t learn in one day.

Rent goes up because zoning and NIMBYs curtail new housing proposals and development.
Materials are a global issue. Inflation is lower in the US than anywhere by Japan. The costs are supply and demand. Capitalism.
Labor goes up because there are not enough workers to fill the jobs, so employers have to pay more to attract and retain.

That restaurants would pay this wage and graciously not raise prices? Those jobs were never meant to provide a living wage. Just causes more inflation and those workers are right back to where they were. Let’s see how many of those workers come off social safety net programs with the higher wages. I’m betting very few. Why don’t democrats understand how capitalism works?

Most fast food fast food places are moving to robots. So this is basically a non issue.

Makes sense. That’s what I would do based on Democratic policies. Robots don’t call in sick, don’t need a 401K, don’t have to pay half of SS or Medicare, don’t have to provide medical insurance, don’t need DEI, etc.

Please stop with your ignorance.

I'm originally from CA. I was just there over spring break. They have been building new housing like crazy - mix of sfh and mfh, and strip malls. Zoning in most of CA allows from a lot of mixed use housing and commercial space.

Inflation is a complicated beast and is being felt worldwide. You are saying that every country has printed too much money and has dem policies? Please.

But, ITA that the labor wage increase was one of those unintended consequences that was obvious from the get go.

People are losing their jobs.

Funny, I live in Orange County (Anaheim area) and housing is crazy. There is not enough. My friends moving here and trying to rent say they can’t find rentals and the ones they do find there are 5-6 bids.

And don’t forget, Panera Bread is exempt from this new minimum wage law. Panera has 24 locations in California all owned by Gregg Flynn, Gavin Newsom’s friend and billionaire campaign donor. Why does Panera get a break and other FF chains don’t? Talk about corruption and crony capitalism. If minimum wage laws actually worked (they don’t) then they should apply to all these businesses not just the ones that aren’t owned by a friend of the Governor. What a joke.

No, right wing propaganda victim, it is not. https://la.eater.com/2024/3/1/24087062/california-fast-food-ab-1228-panera-minimum-wage-exception-gavin-newsom-bread

Did you actually read the article you pasted from your liberal source? Lots of “mays”, “coulds”, “shoulds” but nothing definitive. Newsom is backtracking because he got caught red-handed favoring his political donors. Besides, why should bakeries be exempt while other businesses aren’t? So Gov Hair Gel Newson doesn’t care about the poorly paid workers in bakeries? Also I didn’t think democrats liked Billionaires….what’s up with that? Another victim of left wing propaganda left in the dust.

Well, they shouldn't. It's no different than Trump putting in absurd and illogical tax breaks for real estate developers in the tax legislation. Obviously using political office for self-serving outcomes.

it isn't the dems who need a lesson in macro economics. It is just a plain fact that Dems in the WH are better for the country.

You'll learn your Economic 101 lesson when you or your family member loses their job to AI in the next few years and realize the Republicans aren't there for you.

If everyone loses their job from AI who will pay all the taxes to support Democrats social programs. Better start learning some new skills.

They're coming for all jobs, not just fast food workers. Employers don't want to pay your 401(k) either.

The robots and AI are coming, with or without "democratic policies"

The question is, how does the government respond to ensure there are places for people to work and earn money to pay for housing, food, healthcare and education?

Are you a liberal who expects the govt to solve all your problems? Invest in yourself, increase your skills, so someone is willing to pay for your work.

Yeah, that's the problem, isn't it? There's going to be mass unemployment across the political spectrum, Democrats and Republicans.

If companies can't survive without exploiting workers at wages too low to live on then that tells me those companies didn't have good business models in the first place.
Anonymous
Maybe if corporations could reduce the compensation of CEOs and shift that pay to the people who actually do the hard work, they wouldn’t have to raise prices.

The "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is going to be antiquated advice. But keep up the rhetoric while you can.

I disagree. Should I paste some Twitter posts about how the $20 minimum FF wage is causing FF prices to go up and workers to be laid off?

I wonder who will survive in such an environment. My money is on Republicans.
