Transferring Public Schools - Boys Basketball - Is it worth it?

+1. There's 3000 kids at a school and three of the varsity starters mysteriously transfer from other public high schools. Coaches should have to select their teams from the kids in boundary for that school.

Transfer on what basis? Can coaches do this for basketball reasons? Or is it done by a supposed school-related work-around (e.g., kid moves to new HS to allegedly take a foreign language his old HS doesn't offer)?

Following but we live in another county. DS has a shot at private school recruitment but he's not 6+ ft and we're not going to drain his college fund to pay for a private, with no guarantee a team will be a good fit or play him as a starter (sounds ridiculous to even type this). Probably won't qualify for any meaningful aid and one parent, now retired (early), will have to return to work to pay for private school tuition.

My kid’s public recruited heavily and brought in lots of transfers, including kids from Florida and New Jersey. My kid actually looked at transferring out because over the course of 2 years they brought in 5 transfers who all became starters. One thing I’ll say is that it was fairly hit or miss for the transfers — one kid who moved from out of state didn’t get much playing time and ended up getting cut.

This. You see it all the time now and it's really concerning. The time of going to school where you live is over (if you want it to be).

Hayfield and South Lakes are very much open to any talented transfers as they try to build state championship teams.

Madison and Patriot have done this a lot recently too, and look at their record of success...

The private and Catholic schools can make it affordable for you if they want your kid (regardless of basic need), so take a look at the options!

We were told the best they could do is give us the catholic rate. Kid would have been a starter, but not a star so that may be the difference

An address will be offered if they really want the kid. It’s unfortunate but it happens. They don’t pretend to transfer for academic reasons. Everyone knows this and no, it’s not reported. We know this has happened in other sports too.

Wow...I didn't know this was a thing in public HS.

My son was on the freshman team last year at a large public. He heard that they ask to transfer based on a class his school offers that other schools don't (it was a language, don't remember which one). Then the kid has to take that class, of course.

if they are transferring kids into your child's public school in VA for athletics and they don't live within the boundaries of that school you should notify VIAA. It is not allowed!!!!

Madison offers ASL as a foreign language for this reason

They aren't transferring for athletics. They are transferring to Madison to take "sign language" which isn't offered at their in bound school. Oh, and surprise, they just happened to try out for the basketball team and made the team! Wow, varsity!

My kid’s AAU coach offered an address we could use in Maryland to transfer to the school where he coached b/c DC wasn’t getting playing time. We didn’t consider it, but DS could have started as a sophomore.
