This says, live online class. Is there a live instructor teaching this class that student can see or is it group text chat based?
live instructor that students can't see; it's text based too.

It's too expensive for what is in effect a group text chat participation.

are these "instructors"even US based? No way to tell if they are the same person on the profile if the never show their face or speak a word.

If it is the real instructor that's present, why don't they teach like a normal zoom online class? It's already an expensive class.

They want the student to pay more to see and hear the instructor

The instructor for my kids math competition class with RSM is in Albania. We could care less because he covers the material well and our kid loves the class.

I don't know how the AoPS classes work but the RSM Virtual Class only allows 12 kids into the class. I would guess that a text based chat class would allow for a larger number of kids, making it less expensive then a on camera class where you limit the number of participants so everyone can participate and you decrease potential lag time.

You have a few classes to disenroll and get a partial refund. AOPS is not a lecture based class. They believe in the discovery method for math. It's fine if that's not your kid's thing. I have one that loved it and one that just wants a lecture because it's easier. It's good that you discovered more about what works best for your kid.

My kid who loved AOPS chose a college with classes taught in a more Socratic method. Just something to keep in mind, OP, in a few years when your kid is looking at colleges.

At least RSM is honest about instructor's location, and shows the instructor's face and let's them speak like one would expect from a typical online class. What is unscrupulous about this AoPs offering is first they charge more than a typical online class so it is not less expensive, and more importantly it is termed Live Online class misleading enrolees into thinking it would have a live instructor who appears and teaches the class with audio/video, when it is just a group text chat admin, assisted by more chat assistants who do DM texts. No one know if this chat admin is the same instructor that they display with "photo" during registration and payment.

You are dripping with stupidity. As I mentioned earlier, you should have done more research before you spout stuff randomly. First of all, AoPS text based classes are more rigorous and contain more content than a normal audio/video class. That is because text information can be presented and absorbed at a significantly faster pace than audio/video. Again, if you couldn't bother to actually read these things on their site and think about why that is, that is on you. Also, as a bunch of other people on this thread have repeatedly told you, text is not the only channel of communication; there is a virtual zoom audio/video option (more expensive) and if you happen to be very lucky, there are about a dozen in person academies in the US, (again more expensive for obvious reasons).

AoPS hires people with deep interest and expertise in math, CS, and physics, who also love to teach math to curious and motivated kids. Your comment about not knowing who is teaching the class is (yet again) stupid and irrelevant. It's simply the teacher who is assigned to teach the whole class, which is clearly stated for each class. Given that they teach live, introduce themselves, answer questions live, and students interact via text, your comment about the "chat admin" makes no sense.

If you actually want to educate yourself, you should sit down along with your child and actually take the class together with them for the first two weeks. If you don't like the format, or your child cannot handle the text format because it goes too fast, you can jus cancel prior to the start of the 3rd class and get a full refund. If you have actual relevant questions, you should bring them up here. But don't just whine without even bothering to understand the curriculum.

We started at AoPS so I am aware of the offerings. DS switch to RSM for in person classes, which he did at RSM until this year, because he preferred in person and AoPS in person class was too far away. I thought AoPS was very clear on the different plans, the online vs the online classroom, vs the in person.

DS likes to be with other kids who enjoy math, he does some of the AoPS free stuff for fun at home as well, he just likes being with kids. He took an online class with RSM because that is how he could make math competition work for him.

.

My kid took a class with an instructor who he knew in person, but hadn't seen for a few years. The instructor remembered my kid and they chatted a little prior to the first class. The instructor was a person with a pHD in math and a very impressive resume who was passionate about teaching kids.

My son took several AOPS classes and he had an instructor preference. There was one instructor who he said was funny. Even in a group chat format, personality comes through.

We get it you have your head up AoPs hind.

We got burned too. No where do they mention on their website that their deceptive Live Online means no instructor will be seen or heard.

Curious, how did you burn yourself? It's very clearly spelled out on their main page here, nothing needed other than basic reading comprehension skills: https://artofproblemsolving.com/school/about-classroom

Also, I have so many questions... why didn't you ask for a refund after the first two classes? Were you not even curious enough to sit with your child to see the program? How do you normally handle your Amazon returns?

Unlike AoPs, most Amazon Vendors are honest and correct their misleading product descriptions immediately, instead of sending links from their website with convoluted information. Of course, there are few unscrupulous vendors, and to counter their gimmicks, gladly Amazon has a return policy.

People are so entitled and angry nowadays. There is a massive lack of personal responsibility all over the country. Everyone is a victim.

Why does this matter? Personally, I would prefer an advanced math instructor from a different country over the trash teachers my kids have had in math over the years.
