Wow, how arrogant to tip in your own currency! Get some local currency from the ATM and tip properly for God’s sake!

We asked what they preferred, they were more then fine with the US currency.

Ha ha, this proves that Canada really is just an extension of the USA then. No difference at all. Try tipping in Canadian dollars in the US!

On the way back from Canada last year, we stopped for lunch in a town not too far from the border in Upstate NY. We had some leftover Canadian dollars and asked the waitress -- she was planning a trip to Canada the next weekend and was happy to get them.

Yeah, OK, maybe near the border. But the only use most Americans would have for Canadian dollars is as toilet paper.

No, it’s because US dollars are worth more than CAD. Some stores will accept USD but won’t give you the exchange rate. Ie 1 USD = 1 CAD.

I’m Canadian. It’s fine. Euros are fine too. Canada is very multicultural, especially in the big cities and everyone will appreciate your tip!

But far more inconvenient for them to have to change. Tipping in local currency always preferred.

Th US dollar is currently 1.35 CAD so if you just pretend they are equal while tipping (say, leave US$5 on a CA$25 bill), there will be no inconvenience!

They still have to go exchange the money, which is done at a fee at any exchange place, even most banks these days. Please stop trying to sell your laziness and ignorance as a favour to others.

I’m a Canadian too, and know many people in the hospitality industry. They will smile and accept any tip with grace, but it’s still a huge PITA for them. Most places, you can tip on your card, so if you don’t have cash, do that.

Canada has 1/10th the population of the US, so it's no surprise the US has a big bearing on their lives.

They use 8.5x11" paper, despite using the metric system, for example.
