Move schools for 5th or try the lottery again

In retrospect, I should have done some upper NW elementary schools, but the thought did not occur to me. I am looking for a decent middle which will help with HS admissions. Banneker, McKinley, Walls, all on the table for 9th. She's very bright and a top student, so although we may be doing a disservice by staying in the city and going to mediocre schools, we love all the other aspects of our life overall: short commutes, biking, great community.

What about Sojourner Truth?

Not PP, but that's definitely on our list above our zoned middle school.

SWWFS and ITS both help the kids a ton with high school applications -- train them in interviews, help them build their lists etc. Both these schools make 20-30 offers for 6th grade so there is still a chance for your daughter (we are in a Cardozo feeder also, and I have a son the same age with the same considerations.)

Good luck with Basis. It is an awesome choice, and it lets you stay in DC.

(Also I would absolutely not consider CMI or TR for middle school. If you don't get in to Latins, basis or ITS this year, you can lottery again next year with Hardy, SWWFS, Stuart Hobson, ITS. It's a shame you didn't post this a month ago! Some of the SWWFS and SH feeders almost clear their lists for 5th grade, and some Hardy feeders let in a healthy number.)

I know I will get called a booster for this, but Eliot Hine is doing some great things, has good leadership, good in boundary buy-in, and enrollment is growing. Not saying it is the right fit for everybody, but a good place to put on your list if you are looking for options.

For SH, both Watkins & JOW failed to fill their 5th grades last year, so you could have added them post-lottery.

If she really is a top student then yes you are doing her a disservice by sending her to these schools.

Also the commute by car to upper NW elementary (20-30 minutes min) and then back EOTP or downtown in rush hour traffic (30 plus minute) can be much longer then commute from burbs or on metro. It’s crazy to do this commute when in the burbs you can live near the school or have your kid take the school bus. As to biking and great community, plenty of that in certain areas in burbs.

Add Ludlow-Taylor, Watkins and JO Wilson to your list for a feed to Stuart Hobson. Many of these students go to application HS.

I would move inbounds for Deal for 6th, or a suburban school.

That’s because families are leaving and not interested in SH.

What about DCI?

Good school but impossible to get in due to feeder preference. It’s even harder then Latin and Basis because of this.

SH actually has pretty good buy-in from all three of its feeders (it is why it is similar to hardy somewhat hard to get in OOB). Some 4th graders leave for latin and basis like at pretty much every elementary school across the hill. There is space in 5th if the elementary school wants to keep the same number of classrooms.
