Middle School Lunch Portion

My kid who is over 6 feet tall was ordering three lunches, not realizing how much it cost. I at least got him to drop it to two. I try to load him up on protein in the am.

Our family all packs lunches, I teach, I have one middle schooler and one high schooler. In the morning we are in the kitchen throwing lunches together. Sometimes it’s a sandwich, sometimes leftovers, sometimes something heated up and wrapped in foil (quesadilla) or in a heated thermos (raviolis). We throw in a fruit or vegetable and something salty and crunchy like cheezits. It doesn’t take long, just extra effort to buy the stuff needed for those meals.

I substitute in ES and I have to say the lunches have not looked bad too me. The salad bar looks pretty good and many of the students pile up the salad bar items. I saw the cafeteria staff cutting up peppers that looked pretty good. They had BBQ chicken sandwiches and grilled cheese today that looked pretty decent.

Do the middle schools have salad bars? My ES-aged kids load up on veggies at the salad bar.

They've added a ton of new stuff to the menu this year - there is some variation of Asian food every week, there's a new chicken parmesan sub, and some other things my kids love!

Sounds a lot like the lunch at DD’s school. She still takes lunch nah from home because she says a lot of the food is gross. For instance, she says that sandwiches tend to be soggy; you can press the bread and water will come out. Or they have to take cheese off pizza because it tastes like plastic.

She does say some things are good, like mozzarella sticks. Her favorite item in ES was the brown rice with orange chicken and she says the current version is terrible.

Kids and adults load up at the salad bar. You can put as much as you want on the tray. Add that to the other items and it’s a good sized lunch.

I think the lunches have improved. I haven’t noticed soggy sandwiches. The grilled cheese, meatball subs, chicken parm sandwich, and bbq chicken are all better than decent.

This is a question for USDA and how many calories they think kids should get.

It’s an issue in Arlington too. A mom on a local group was distraught earlier this year because her son depends on school breakfast and lunch and doesn’t have enough energy to play sports after school - but she doesn’t have enough money to buy more food at home.

She doesn’t have about money to buy food but she can’t afford sports? Huh.

My ES kids have had and like the first two (and they don't particularly like most of the options FCPS has). They aren't big on the black bean tacos and they haven't been offered the spicy chicken wrap. In general they have been bigger fans of the new options this year than of the regular items.

Maybe the sports costs are subsidized.

Schools have sports/teams that aren't expensive. Probably free if you're FARMS.
