Huh? Pretty much any serious STEM parent will have MIT as the dream school.

DP. Are you aware that many parents have Humanities kids? STEM is not the end-all, be-all.

Of course, but it was in response to a PP saying they know no one who has MIT as their dream school, which is obviously false.

I went to Harvard and MIT is still my dream school.

1. MIT
2. Princeton
3. Harvard
4. Stanford
5. Duke
6. UMich
7. Yale
8. NYU
9. Cornell
10. Brown

How does this compare to the thoughts in your households?

Yes to all except UMich, NYU, and Cornell. Surprised no Columbia!

Not surprised by Columbia.

Least appealing Ivy to us + would choose another 8-10 T20 schools over it.

This was a US survey - if you start polling international Columbia would shoot up into the top 10, probably right behind Duke

It’s also a major draw for domestic people too! Doesn’t explain why Columbia misses in the top 10.

It commits the unforgivable sin of being in the Midwest. Most Dmv people have never been there & assume the rust belt & farm stereotypes are accurate.

It’s a big country. There are lots of people who don’t worship NYC, & even if they think it’s an ok place to visit, that doesn’t necessarily translate into it being a place they would want to live or go to college. The high prices, difficult housing market, rising crime, constant distractions, & nasty people don’t exactly combine to make it an ideal setting to focus on one’s studies—to many people. I’m sure some people will disagree.

Celebrity kids also graduate from there, like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s. That’s hardly the point, as you well know. The University of Michigan is the only school in the top ten on this list that has it all. Great academics, social life, athletics, and an impressive campus in a conveniently located college town. It is also very well known internationally. There is no other public or private university that’s does so many things as well coupled with a huge alumni following and overall school spirit.

Curious. Besides the Obama daughter, which celebrity kid transferred out? I know Kelly Ripa’s son is there now.
