What schools have a lot of outside time?

Agreed. Our Montessori charter has a great chunk of time alloted for recess/lunch - about 1.5 hours total between the two. And they go out pretty regularly in cold weather, but also have solid fun if it has to be an indoor recess.

x2 - we're at Breakthrough and they go outside a lot. Long lunch/recess time and then they'll also often go outside during After School.

I'm typically probably more of an ITDS champion here but this is one area where I feel like they are actually not so great, and it seems out of alignment with their student-forward approach. My very high energy kid in upper elementary gets bummed every day it's gray/drizzly because he knows they will be kept inside all day. I've heard the points of view about appropriate outerwear, differences between communities about temperatures and conditions that people are comfortable with, but it's still a bummer

Can you talk more about the actual messaging the school provides about this? I think I know what you mean but Im curious about how its conveyed to parents.

it's not communicated in any official way; this is what I've heard in one-off conversations

Washington Yu Ying. They have 2 outdoor recesses a day. Plus outdoor pickup except on the worst weather days.

Breakthrough does. Although we decided to leave, I loved that my child went out in all kinds of weather (I detested the mud lot they play in) and seemed to have a substantial bit of outdoor time.

For all grade levels? How long is each recess? Is there a good indoor area for recess when the weather doesn’t allow them to go outside?

The hour outside a day was not our experience there in elementary school. Maybe for PK.

No DC public schools have a lot of outdoor time relative to privates.

At Seaton at least they do PE outside when it's nice? Plus recess, plus there is a garden that can be used for academics... PK uses it a lot, but that drops off in K-5.

Many days when they don't go out, but I think the outdoor time is decent.
