I feel that online versions of department stores have potential.

The fashionistas on here are very down on what I would consider traditional brands (e.g., Talbot's).

Based on my mom's shopping experiences and recommendations on other DCUM threads, you might try Dillard's. Macy's online is pretty obvious plus it would be easier to return things that don't work out.

Another option might be David's Bridal. There are many plus size brides and bridal party members. You might find a suitably formal dress there.

Tell us what your ideal silhouette is, and maybe people can suggest some options?

OP here. I have no idea what that means.

By silhouette I mean..describe the basic outline of dresses you like. Like a pencil sketch of the sleeves, neckline, waist, length. Most people have styles they like, and some no gos.

For example:

I like sleeves and never do sleeveless.
Cleavage or no cleavage? Scoop or sweetheart or vee?
You already said no defined waist
Length?
Colors you like?
Beading or no beading (sequins/pearls)
Can you post some examples of things that look good to you? Because I think my style is traditional/classic and the things I post have the bodycon fashionistas screaming "Omg, No!" Since you asked for matronly, we'd like to help you look comfy but not old and unattractive...let's aim higher!

Also I'm intrigued by the people who suggest eShakti for dress customization. I'm not there yet, but have considered it.

Okay, prefer a sleeve but it can be see through, prefer vee neck - high waist is supposed to be better on me, rouging helps, it’s not that I don’t want a waist, it is just that I don’t really have one ( between an apple and a rectangle), I am a true “winter” so jewel tones and black and red are good. Black looks the best. My legs and arms are fit, my ankles are freakishly small. I carry everything in my bust (40G) and belly (stress and metabolism issues) - no hips or butt. I have completely grey/white hair - except for eyebrows and eyelashes which are black. I am Scottish and English - very pale. I look like I stopped by the parts store when they were out of complete sets and had to get spares parts from several body types. I have looked middle aged my entire life and am now entering my cronehood.

I will add that in the past I have been able to get my pants from petite and my tops from tall. Short legs, long torso.

You sound a lot like me, OP. I'd browse through Macy's and David's Bridal online. This one has a nice beaded jacket and comes in navy and black.

PP again. Looks better in navy. Hopefully this works.

You sound not that different than me. Evening clothes with more structure work for me, to help even out the different sizes of parts of my body. So maybe not super flowy gowns.

NP, but same size as OP. I ordered a dress from eShakti and received a big sack. It was awful and I felt defeated. YMMV.

I’ve worn a dress similar to this to weddings for years. Navy blue is my best color. Plus, a dress like this is comfortable and not restrictive.

Wow if anyone could take these recent recs down a notch suitable for a college graduation I'd owe you a big debt of gratitude. (but size 12ish)

What month is the wedding?

Why not wow a little bit?? Life is short, you deserve to feel beautiful. I love this designer, the dresses are pricey but I can attest that the quality and fit are great. These are all over the place in terms of vibe depending on what season the weather is but these sound like they would fit. I'm a size 14 in normal clothes and have two of their dresses in 14 and they fit beautifully.

(this is my fave based on what you're looking for and body type)
