Don't talk smack on hoarders!
Ever. |
Thanks for asking this OP. Hoarders is too gross for me, and I can't relate, but there was an episode once where the woman was an extreme shopper and had her "hoard" in Rubbermaid/Sterilite tubs, but dozens, if not hundreds, of them, stacked throughout the house. I've watched Marie Kondo and a couple episodes of The Home Edit (didn't care for it) but will have to check out some of the other suggestions. |
Look, I've been watching Hoarders, but a LOT of the homes they feature have hoards of rotting food, urine saved in bottles for some reason (toilet stopped working?), garbage, rodent droppings, and even dead animals or their skeletons. I've seen clients refusing to let go of a filthy piece of garbage because it could be cleaned and then used by someone. I'm more interested in seeing people who have mounds of paperwork they just have trouble letting go of, but more from being overwhelmed versus having an emotional attachment to the object or paper. Seeing how an organizer could help them create rules for which things to save, which things to toss, and why... for inspiration. |
The Home Edit had a series on Netflix, I think. |
There's a channel on Youtube called The Carla Project. Carla helps friends and family declutter and she's very charming. It's a very pleasant show.
There's also a channel called Midwest Magic Cleaning that I enjoy. They do a lot of hoarder houses and some of them are gross, but most are not -- just people with a LOT of stuff. I also think it's less exploitive of the hoarders than the show Hoarders. They don't show the people and the man who does the cleaning goes out of his way to be non-judgmental. It's actually very inspiring. |
I wanted to add -- Carla is inspiring because she shows the process of deciding what to throw away and what to keep. Midwest Magic Cleaning is helpful because he goes through strategies for how to tackle a severely cluttered/hoarded house without getting overwhelmed. This video is a good example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIsOe_lVSfs |
Also, there's another channel called Peeling Away the Clutter that's just one sweet older lady who had health issues and let her house get out of control who is gradually getting it back in order. She got help from another YouTuber with her kitchen, but otherwise she's just plugging along making progress by herself, and its nice because it seems very real. |
A Slob Come Clean has a YouTube channel and a podcast. I like to listen along as I declutter. |
Loved Niecy and the crew. Neat is about decluttering and organizing, not hoarding so nothing gross. |
He has high functioning autism and does it to help people and because he enjoys the process. |
