+1 Especially when everyone knows they take something like 80% of their class ED. They need tons of RD apps to claim high selectivity so spam tons of kids that have practically zero chance of admission.

And make take even more than 80% of their class ED (They are not transparent about these numbers)...It is a good school, but these tactics to appear more selective is shady.

Chicago is super geographically isolated and stagnant flyover country to people who grew up on the coasts or booming South. And living there as an 'outsider' you realize how acutely provincial it is. It's largely Big Ten and Notre Dame graduates still hanging out with and dating their high school pals.

Provincial? Pot meet kettle.

LOL, Chicago is bigger than DC.

What is the point in making a new thread for the sole purpose of bashing a school (as well as, apparently, an entire city)? Does it make you feel superior?

Someone on here said that UChicago takes almost 90% of their applicants early decision, which is insane.

No, I am wondering if others are bombarded by them or other schools? Also why would I feel superior about my kid getting bulk mail? Clearly they got our address from the PSAT and AP, as mentioned up thread. (Thanks! Didn’t think of that)

I’m not the type of parent whose identity is really tied up with my kid’s college selection. As long as DC gets a degree, I don’t care where. I went to a third tier state school on a full scholarship for “the poors” as DCUM phrases it. I managed to do ok despite this. 😉

This troll is relentless, that’s for sure.

Apparently you missed last week's thread of people who said that they do not apply to Johns Hopkins because they/their kid would never live "in Baltimore."

There are many other threads about getting mail from uChicago. If your kid got a decent PSAT score they are on the mailing list. Along with Wash U, Northeastern, UNC, and a few other schools. Over 11th and 12th grade we got a mountain of mail. Stacked up over 6 feet high.

And then it all stopped. It is what it is.

My DCs are there. I don’t recall mail that was excessive- the most mail came from NYU actually. The Chicago pieces were funny and made them feel like they wanted to apply. One LAC mailed them socks.

Interesting. My kid gets a lot of mail from U of Chicago. But even more from uva. Especially lately. Email, flyers. Constant.

I don’t know if the ED percentage is 80% but I do know U Chicago wants kids who want them , not just kids who default to U Chicago because they didn’t get into Harvard. So why wouldn’t they want to take the ED kids who are declaring they want to first choice Chicago? Seems like a big win-win. They’ll still get some great kids RD or ED2, but their head of admissions has said very clearly they value the kids who want to be there. No one is making anyone apply RD- just don’t apply if you don’t like your chances RD.

The problem is these chances can’t be calculated because Chicago, unlike almost all selective schools, refuses to release its ED numbers on the CDS.

They offered seats to roughly 1000 of the 20000 ED applicants this year. Rough numbers

That’s a 5% ED admit rate so your numbers are way, way off.
