I have a gas dryer, gas hot water heater, gas stove and gas heat. And a gas fireplace. My oven is electric. And my washer runs on electricity - but when it runs on the hot water cycle, the water is heated by gas. I cant afford to replace all the appliances with electric ones. |
You’re going to feel really empty and unfulfilled 50 years from now when you’re an old woman and the world didn’t heat up like you said it would because I never got rid of my gas appliances. |
Dude, get a drying rack. Very few clothes run through our dryer ever. |
Oh please. You can afford it easily; they have sales all the time. You can afford it, you just don’t want to do the right thing for the planet. |

DP We are not in a climate crisis. Calm the F down, Susan. ![]() |
I'm in a similar situation and will wait until the appliance breaks down before replace with electric. It seems wasteful to rip everything out now. Some of the items are only 8 years old from when we renovated. |
Back in the olden days of my youth, everybody had a gas dryer. Now, it's more common to have an electric one. You probably can't just change from one to the other because of the difference in the way they are installed in the house. Gas dryers need a gas hookup while electric dryers need a 220V connection. Most houses have one or the other, but not both. It's the same way with an electric or gas oven. You probably only have connections for one type in your kitchen. If you want to change, you'll need to hire a plumber to run gas pipe or an electrician to install a 220V circuit. |
This. Use some common sense. Getting rid of a newish appliance causes more harm than good. |
As already stated, you cannot easily change your gas oven or dryer to electric without having an electrician rewire your house for the required 220V connections. It will probably cost several hundred $$ or more depending on the configuration of your house. |
There is no such thing as a gas clothes washer. Dryers can be gas but only if you have the high voltage circuit that's required. This is the same type of circuit used for level 2 car chargers.

Ooops, sorry, I meant electric dryers need the high voltage. Gas dryers need a gas pipe connection. Most people don't have both in their laundry area. |
Had gas dryer in old house. Ran exactly same way as our current electric. No difference in operation. |
People, there's a big difference in installation of gas vs. electric appliance. You cannot simply remove one and put in another without rewiring electric or running a new gas pipe. This is true for your dryer, oven, water heater, furnace, etc. |
+1. I am replacing the gas appliances with electric when they die. |
