My understanding is that the course material may not align with the AP exam. He wants to take the exam for college credit/ admissions.
He will have actual college credit (taken by most but not all colleges) and will not have to worry about taking the AP exam.

Many selective colleges only give pre-req credit for APs now, not actual course credit towards graduation.
