Online AP classes

Anonymous
Has your child taken any online AP classes online during the summer thru MSDE approved vendors for credit? My son’s counselor suggested he apply to take AP Chem during the summer because he can’t fit it into his schedule next year. I’m worried that it will be too difficult because of the abbreviated summer schedule. Also, does anyone know if it’s asynchronous, synchronous or a hybrid format? The counselor doesn’t have access to the MSDE’s vendor list.

I looked at it and they don't supply the vendor list online which is strange. Their virtual school programs are all asynchronous with no live teaching and at best email support. Maybe a private school has it?

Thanks. Apparently students can only get course credit towards graduation thru approved online vendors so no privates. However, I think JHU CTY is on the list.

The abbreviated schedule doesn't matter because the online class is just a checkbox in the paperwork for the transcript. Student can self stuff before, during and after the official class, to prepare for the AP exam.
I strongly recommend starting study before the summer session starts.

Thanks, he already uses Khan Academic for AP Calc and AP Bio. I will tell him to start soon.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just take college chem at the local community college, where the course is conceptualized to fit into the summer session?

My understanding is that the course material may not align with the AP exam. He wants to take the exam for college credit/ admissions.

AP Chemistry is heavily lab based. I don’t see how an online version is a good replacement. Agree with the community college suggestion. Colleges treat AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credits the same from both an application and credit standpoint.

I would not recommend trying to take AP Chemistry over the summer. It is one of the hardest AP classes. And the AP exam is in May so he will have forgotten a lot of what he learned over the summer. Why can he not take it during the school year. Cramming in too many AP classes is generally a bad idea.

+1. And then spend the school year with Khan Academy or some other resource reviewing for the exam next May.

Radical idea, take the class a different year in HS, or choose APChem over a different elective. Why are kids and parents trying to cram every advance class possible into HS?

My very smart son took AP Chem on-line from CTY and found it difficult... I agree that it's not the best class for that format.
