| I agree it depends on your hair ... My straight haired friends look good with random cuts from Bang. I have wavy/curly hair and whenever I go to someone random, they wash it and cut it as though it is straight, and then it looks crazy. I need someone to go in and cut out layers, internal layers, take out weight etc. so I found one guy who does it well and have sticked with him for years, every 4 months. |
| My hairstylist has about doubled since I first saw him ten years ago. Anyone have a good reference for wavy, difficult hair? |
| I am the opposite of you. I have regular appointments with my hair stylist, my mani/pedi lady, my masseuse, my facialist, and my acupuncturist. I'm mid 40s |
|
Mid 40's here, and I don't do any of that stuff. I cut my own hair, don't care for manicures/pedicures, and generally get assumed to be late 30s.
I'd rather take care of myself in other ways - exercise and fitness, mainly. |
|
I have a hair person because I have bad hair and hair cuttery isnt going to do it correctly consistently. I’m also prematurely grey…
I never get my nails done. I rarely do it myself either. I hate pedicures. |

I tried to develop a regular stylist when I was younger (40s now) and used to do regular nail salons visits. I'd cut back when I had kids mid-30s but then all this fell off a cliff during the pandemic.
Now I cut my own hair (I wear it in a gently layered cut a few inches past my shoulders and cut it using the viral "unicorn haircut" technique from YouTube and it's better than 90% of long haircuts I've gotten) and tend my own nails (paint them once every few months, usually before an event or vacation when I do it with my DD). I have also been using a box dye in my natural shade to cover my grays, though I'm playing with growing out the gray as it's at a point where it's a kind of multi-colored tortoise effect (brown, blonde, and gray mixed together) and I kind of like how my roots look. I am saving thousands annually this way. Like I easily used to spend $300-400 two or three times a year for cuts and color before, plus probably another $600 annually on my nails? Then add in touch up color appointments and, when I wore my hair shorter, trims, and I was easily spending over 2k a year on my hair and nails. Now I probably spend $100 total on box dye and some home supplies for my hair and nails. I splurged on a good pair of hair scissors during the pandemic that I now use for my own hair as well as cuts for my kids. |
I just did the long post about shifting from spending 2k to more like $100 and yes to this. I'd get a personal trainer or a session of float therapy before doing a full cut and color at a salon again. I will get more out of it. I also splurge on skincare, massages, and good quality clothes. |
| My hair is stick straight and I don't dye it so I am not particular about stylists. I used to have a regular nail lady but I learned to do my own during the pandemic. |

I have a regular stylist, I go probably 3 a year.
Dye my own hair, do my own nails/pedi. I know what you mean, in the summer esp I see women with professional pedicures (mine are just maybe a forgiving pale pink - could never do a bright or dark color myself) & I wonder what that is like. Feels like you have your life together more than I do or something. It’s not the money for me, it just feels exhausting to have that many appointments outside of dr/dentist/eye dr/kids appt/pets vet & grooming/house maintenance appts/work mtgs…like it is so just so much already do the minimum. |
| I’m actually high maintenance but I get my hair cut at hair cuttery. It’s an easy cut. I have no grays so I don’t dye it. Otherwise I spend a lot on clothes, shoes, purses, Botox, face serums. |
| I get my hair cut at a salon because it’s curly. I color at home and also do my nails at home when the inspiration strikes. I tried getting a mani/pedi once at a nail place and they tried to butcher my cuticles so I ran out of there and have never gone back. |
| Same as you. I might get my hair trimmed once a year or have my husband trim it. Don't to my nails. |
Same here! |
| who are you hanging out with OP? I'm the only one that has painted nails but I do everything myself. Time and $$ spent in a salon is time and money gone. |
|
I shop almost exclusively at thrift stores; clothes, purses, dishes, home decor, furniture, etc. I also cook every night. I get my greys covered every four weeks, my hair cut every 8 weeks at an Aveda salon and a mani/pedi every two weeks. |
