No hairstylist - is that normal?

Anonymous
Feels like all other women I know have their personal hair stylist and visit beauty salon regularly to get pedicure done. I don't have either. I go to hair cuttery and don't paint my nails... Been like this my entire adulthood but now am somehow getting self-conscious for not following the 'norm'. How many ladies here are like me?

I cut my own hair and paint my own nails when I feel moved to do so. I know I’m not normal but I also don’t care. I’d rather spend my money on other things.

I’m similar. Not wedded to any one stylist (I go to Bang as needed) and just trim/buff my nails at home.

I've had the same stylist for 12 years but only because she's affordable and cuts my hair the way I like it.

If it works for you, it’s fine. Many of us have hair with weird textures and once we find someone who can do it well, we want to hang on to that person to avoid getting horrible haircuts. I maybe get a professional mani/pedi once a year.

I get a pedicure maybe three times a year - I go to one of two places. One I can walk to, and one has more color options.

You should do whatever works for you and don't worry about other people.

You’re hanging out on a beauty forum…

But if you have a simple hair style you can have anyone do it. Most women do not paint their nails.

In my family, we have simple haircuts and we cut each other’s hair. My spouse helps me color my roots. I occasionally paint my own toenails. Works for us and $ in the bank.

I used to go to an expensive hair stylist and eventually switched to the lady who cuts my kid’s hair at Hair Cuttery. No difference except I’m saving a ton of money. Do my own mani/pedis too…again, saving a ton of money. If I had ever been the kind of woman who cares deeply about this kind of thing, perhaps it would bother me, but luckily I am not that person.

I’ve never had a regular stylist. Sometimes I go to Super Cuts, sometimes to a regular/pricier salon, sometimes I trim my own hair. I have abundant, shoulder length hair that’s very forgiving. I go to a salon about 3 times a year, at most. I haven’t highlighted or dyed my hair since I was in high school.

I don’t use nail polish, fingernails or toenails, except on very, very rare occasions when I feel like it. It’s been years since I’ve done it. I give no thought to what others may think of my neat, trimmed, healthy but natural nails.

None of that makes me a frump. I’m fit, have a nice figure, great hair, take good care of my skin, and dress well. I get lots of compliments from friends, acquaintances, and random strangers.

Do what makes you feel good about yourself and what you think looks good on you. Don’t worry about the “norm.”

+100 for me it's not a money issue it's I like how easy it is to do my own things.

Great clips cuts hair just as good as $200 salons.

I'm the same! I'm in my mid 50s and have never had a mani or a pedi in my life. I do my own, just clear polish. But my nails are clean, trimmed, and painted.

I was going to Great Clips, but found a great stylist who will wash, cut, blow dry, and style my hair for $40 (plus tip). Look around, these stylists don't advertise and tend to work in salons that aren't glossy and serve you wine.

I use the L'Oreal Paris Couleur Experte 2-step Hair Color and Highlight kit for $14. I get compliments from total strangers.

A great cut and color is all you need.

Pedicures are nasty. Never use someone else’s toe nail clippers and file for dry skin. That is disgusting.

I go to my hairstylist for cuts because my hair is difficult to deal with, but do my own single process hair color to cover gray and do my own nails.

I've never found salon mani/pedis to be worth it and find pedicures to be skeevy. I also dislike sitting around salons.
