Ski trip break down

Anonymous wrote:This was my trip to Italy over Christmas for 4 people with 8 days of skiing:

Flights to Geneva x4 - $3200
Transport to and from resort - $400
Lift tickets x4 - $1000
Private instructor every day (everyone is a good skier but we still do this) - $400/day so $3200
Accommodation (2 bed apartment) - $1800
Food - lunches and snacks in mountain restaurants every day, dinner 4 days in restaurants and 4 days in apartment, breakfast in apartment every day - $1500
Ski equipment rentals - $800

Total - around $12000. We could definitely have avoided the instructor splurge but we enjoy that, so if you remove that then more like $9000. We could also have chosen more luxury accommodation (or spent even less if we chose a one bed apartment) so some of this is variable.

Sorry this doesn’t help me at all. I ski in Europe all the time and know how much it costs. I needed to know how much it costs in the U.S.

Whistler would be my choice.

Nobody can answer that question for you because there are too many variables. Stop being lazy and do some research.

Then you actually need to write that in your title / OP.

Anonymous wrote:These are prices for a week trip to CO, UT or MT

Epic passes: ~$2200 for family of 4 (no military discount, combo of unlimited passes for kids and set number of days for adults)

Flights: free with southwest points

Transportation: ~$700 (either car rental or shuttle to mountain)

condo: ~$3000 (less for Big Sky or Winter Park, more for Park City area). We typically rent a one bedroom walking distance to base or next to the parking lot so we can use the parking shuttle. Sometimes for a long weekend we stay outside of Salt Lake City and drive to Park City, that makes lodging more like $200/night and we eat dinner at fast casual restaurants.

Food: About $90/day for lunches, we try to bring some snacks and hot chocolate packets in our pockets to avoid paying $5 for stuff like that. We tend to eat breakfast and dinner in condo

Lessons: We no longer do many lessons but when we do they can be crazy expensive. Our kids are the same level so we sometimes do half day privates instead of full day lessons. Those end up being as much as $900/day including tip. But now we just do one or two when we go to a new resort. When my kids were little and we paid for 4 days of full-day lessons, the cost was close to the cost of a week beach rental.

Similar - we are going to Breck over spring break:

Flights - free, points on United
Epic Pass - about $2200 for 4 people
Lodging - $2000 for 2 bed condo on shuttle line to lift, walking distance to downtown
Car: $600 rental for the week
Skis: we own our own gear, kids purchased used or hand me downs from friends
Food - bfast and most dinners in condo, lunches on the mountain - probably $100/day

I don't know how anyone is only spending $2-3,000 for 5 days ski lodging for 2 rooms. If we're at a place less than a week, and sometimes even then, we always stay ski-in/out and it costs about that much per night. For fun reference, Deer Valley St Regis is $4,000 per night for a standard king room.

I'm the PP you are quoting and I don't stay at the St Regis. I hunt around for a while to find a cheaper airbnb, often a small one bedroom. We spend a lot on vacations and often ski out west multiple times a year but don't see the benefit of splurging on a fancy place when we ski. Now that our kids are older, we also don't always stay ski in/ ski out as long as the logistics are easy.

Yeah, you are choosing the resort with one of the most expensive lodging and one of the most expensive properties. There are other options.

Exactly when our kids were little and we wanted to stay ski in-ski out, we skied at cheaper mountains and skied Mon-Fri on a non-holiday week (since we did not worry about kids missing school).

I’ve spent anywhere from $5k- $20k for a week depending on time of year. Doesn’t include passes because I buy those anyway. Some places we need a car (Telluride,Vail, Utah usually), others we don’t (e.g., Aspen, Jackson, sun valley). Some trips we do hotels, others we do condos and make most of our meals in the house.

I can't tell if you are purposely being obtuse or are just someone who is so privileged that you are 100% out of touch with reality.

Just like all vacations, a ski trip can cost $5k or $ 30K+. Depends on when and where you go and the tier of lodging you choose so stay in.

Sure you can pay $4k/night for the st Regis but you could also get an Airbnb nearby for a under $4k for the week.

We are a family of 3 who went to Steamboat over Christmas and we are going to Snowbird/Alta over Spring break. We buy IKON passes when they go on sale in the spring. 2500 (2 adults. 1 child)

Flight: 2k
Ski in/out condo: 5K
Car on Turo:600
Food: 1500 total
Ski School 3 days: 1250

Alta/Snowbird will be a bit less espensive because DCPS spring break is so late

Flight: used miles
Ski in/out condo: 3600
1 day ski school 250 (It is so late that we can only do 1 day of ski school because the resorts stopped ski school for kids)
Car on Turo: 400
Food We will probably be eating in more because the restaurant options are limited

Skiing is expensive no matter what and there aren't lots of opportunities for cutting costs besides the Epic or Ikon and maybe staying away from the mountain. Our munckin is 6 so it is worth it to us to stay on the mountain.

We use Turo so that we can be guaranteed an AWD SUV without being held hostage at the rental car company.
