Buy a flourless chocolate cake, douse with rum and set on fire. Dessert and a show. Kids can have their own FCC without alcohol

My uncle’s hair caught fire doing this once when we were kids. Now that was a show!

Terrifying! Are you afraid of fire now? No candles on birthday cakes?

I’d buy a small flourless chocolate cake for the 6 adults and make brownies or rice krispie treats for the kids.

It may not look all that fancy but people go crazy over this. We do a "hack" sometimes where we sub heavy cream for the milk if it's a really special occasion.

Maybe if served in individual footed bowls. Otherwise it looks like a sloppy dump of ingredients. Like you tried to make a layer cake, failed, and made trifle.

Not the way I make it.

I love homemade desserts. I despise store bought ones. They really aren’t good. I’d rather have no dessert than some crappy Whole Foods cake.

Actually the Whole Foods berry Chantilly cake is quite delicious.

Another vote for pavlova - it always gets oohs and ahhs.

This is really delicious. The ingredients may sound a little odd but it tastes like a traditional dessert

Also a good one and uses puff pastry, which is easy but impressive

Cheesecake

Sara Lee pound cake with berries and whipped cream, shaved dark chocolate if you like

Find a bakery that makes Swiss roll -- that's so pretty

Key lime pie is sooo easy to make. Get a bottle of Nellie and Joe’s key lime juice and follow the directions to a T. Comes out perfect all the time. Can be made the night before and chilled. Serve with whipped crest and raspberry coulis

Make a box of Duncan Hines brownies for the kids or rice krispy treats.

Flourless chocolate cake is also impressive and very easy.

Profiteroles (cream puffs with ice cream and chocolate sauce) are simple but impressive. Flourless chocolate cake is also a good option. There are a bunch of desserts you can easily make with frozen puff pastry. Personally, I wouldn’t bring anything that had an easily recognizable grocery ingredient (e.g., Cool Whip, low end bakery cake, boxed cake mix, etc.). If you don’t want to cook, a fruit tart from someplace like Wegmans should be fine. I wouldn’t worry about the kids; they’re not going to be picky. Something like brownies should make them happy.

I made an almond flour olive oil cake for Christmas desert and it was easy to make and a big hit! I served it with powdered sugar and macerated blackberries.
