More steady than spurt for my son. Has always grown about 3” per year. 13-14y he grew 4”, 14-15y he grew 2”. I think he’ll slowly add 1-2” more, just depends how long it lasts.
My siblings and I all grew in older years (until 18-19), but my kids seem to be done sooner. My daughter reached full height by 14, which is probably pretty normal, but her mom and aunt grew past 18, so it seemed early to us. |
Our DS grew from 5’5 ish to 6’1 in two years. He is almost 15. It’s been crazy to witness, but am sure it’s normal. He’s hoping for another inch or so. Though my DH and I are not that tall, I have some 6’3” cousins on my side so maybe! Middle school years were the biggest growth spurts with 8th garden the most . Meanwhile he has two sisters who might be 5’5 and it’s like we are all living with a giant. |
My DS (born late September) was tiny at the beginning of 8th grade (he looked and sounded 10 or 11) and probably 5'6" by his 14th birthday in 9th. He started growing in the spring during 8th grade.
He reached his final height by 16 (between 5'9 and 5'10), which made him the tall one in our house. |
It's all over the place. Have two boys. Oldest was always tall. From 2nd grade onwards. Youngest was also always the youngest in his grade - summer bday - and significantly smaller than his big bro. Probably average for his age. Then 10th and 11th grade happened. They're both 6'2 now. |
Google Tanner Stages of puberty. Only your doctor can tell you exactly what Tanner Stage your son is in, because it's all about testicle size.
Boys' highest growth velocity is at Tanner stage 3/4. My son is 15 1/4 and still at the end of Tanner 2. But I would say most of his friends hit their growth spurt in the last 2 years. He's a late bloomer. |
Are you a family of late bloomers? Mine are.
DS grew almost 9" between 15 and 18. Started HS at 5'1.25". Ended HS at 5'10". He's still growing. At 18.5, he's now 5'10.5". DH stopped growing around 20/21. DD started her period at 15. She's 5'5". Also still growing. |
August birthday son, was only 5’4 when he started high school, now in 10th grade and almost 5’10 and still has a few more inches to go. Was complaining a lot about being one of the shortest in 9th grade. |
In 8th grade my son grew so fast I had to buy him new clothes three times in one year. He's still growing in 9th, but not as quickly. He's as tall as my husband now, and I'm fervently hoping he keeps growing, because my husband is on the shorter side. |
DS is going through his first growth spurt now at age 15.5. He was determined to be a very late bloomer by his doctor and is still in very early stages of puberty, which tracks since we have late bloomers on both sides of the family. He's grown about 4 inches since beginning of the school year but is still behind most of his peers (he also has a summer birthday and is on the young end for his grade). Dr expects he'll continue to grow through high school, and possibly into college. |
My son was very short (second shortest boy in the entire grade) up until he was a couple months shy of turning 14. Then his big growth spurt started and he grew a lot that year (9th grade). |
I’ve never heard 8-9 inches but that’s great. My 12 year old is not even 5 feet tall yet but obv hasn’t started puberty. I’d love him to get 9 more inches! |
15 |
Around 14.5-15.5 for mine. Grew about 5 inches from one summer to the next, then tacked on a few more inches more slowly.
My DS barely grew at all in middle school and was one of the smallest boys at 8th graduation, after being pretty average sized to tall as a kid. The vast majority of the boys grew a LOT in middle school or from around 12-14. I found there to be a lot of stories about later bloomers online but IRL my DSs growth pattern has seemed really unusual. Not sure why the difference. |
We had a reversed split. First one shot up to taller than me at 12.5, and the second outgrew me at 13.5. Third one is now 12 and on the approach but I'm still taller. |
DS1 at 12 and DS2 seems to be starting growth spurt and about to turn 13
DS1 was definitely early. Most of his friends seemed to grow in 8th/early 9th - but I definitely know kids who still looked like little kids through sophomore year. FWIW DS1 was really obsessed/excited with how tall he was going to be as an adult when he hit 5’9” at 13. Now at 15 he’s only 5’10.5 and readjusting his expectations as all the other kids catch up! |
