UMD in state vs. Delaware honors?

What matters is your major, how well you do in college, and the internships you can get. DMV is a great place to do research assistant, or internships gigs.

Especially for a woman.

- parent of a kid in UMD Honors.

OP kid did not get into UMD honors

Why are people (parents, really) obsessed with Honors College? It doesn’t even go on the student’s transcript.

Agree with this.

A relic of high school life in this area and other UMC cities/areas. They deem it just a natural continuation of the honors & AP, & IB etc.... they've been undertaking all their 7/8 grade to 12th grade years.

Yes, I was wondering this. Does anyone care? Seems to me there’s the potential for a lower gpa and you have to explain you’re in the honors college, which still may mean nothing.

So that's a universal decision by colleges and universities?

At UMD gives you a better chance at a good dorm. Honestly not a big deal though.

Most universities do notate transcripts with Honors College for honors students.

Just learned that NACUBO classifies U Delaware as a private institution (state assisted but privately governed).

+1 My kid is at UMD honors, and they chose the LLP based on the best dorms. They are going to drop honors because it interferes with their plans for courses they want to take. It really is nbd.

In-state tuition at the inarguably better school and you are questioning this? OP, no one cares about honors.

It very much depends on which school you're at. Some schools it's great and meaningful, other schools not so much. I think the UMD people saying Honors College is not a big deal are trying to reassure OP that UMD is the better choice even without Honors College for an in-state kid based on value and quality of education.

My law school roommate went to UMD back in the day and Honors College really was a big deal and meaningful back then -- so apparently it's changed a lot over the years.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I was specifically talking about UMD.

OP - glad to see there is a consensus here and it’s what I was thinking too. I had asked the question because I know a few people who are saying they would definitely go with honors at UD over UMD. Just didn’t make sense to me.
