MCPS policy? Gut check?

My kid was in 5th last year and I could check grades for all subjects via ParentVue.
There was only one subject that wasn’t updated regularly (a special) and when I expressed concern, the AP confirmed that they should have indeed been updating grades more frequently.
So if you aren’t seeing grades updated regularly you should first reach out to the teacher responsible and if that doesn’t resolve the issue, take it to admin.

My 5th grader doesn't get much put into ParentVue either, but every few weeks or so, she comes home with a pile of graded assignments. So I have a hard time understanding how OP's kid's teacher neither used ParentVUE/Synergy to post grades or paper assignments. That would have been a red flag for me way before the end of the marking period.

There is no standard for teachers. It sucks. Many teachers refuse to work with parents. Some are great but it’s rare.

Yes, I would expect communication about it. I don’t know that I would receive anything about it, but like you, I would be upset to find out after the fact.

Are you sure it’s a letter grade and not C for consistent? That appears in the report card too and confuses some parents. (Or O for occasional)

my husband nearly had a heart attack when he saw a C on my daughters report card. I had to explain to him that it mean consistently.

I teased my kid for getting four of these Cs. It seems like they should a different letter like R for regularly (or whatever isn’t otherwise used on the report cards).

What subjects did your kid get the C's in ?

I would request a conference to discuss and also to request affirmative communicaiton - or grades being uploaded in a timely manner to ParentVue.

I have reached out to the teacher to see what happened but is this a scenario where you would expect communication in advance of the report card at any point? Does any MCPS policy require parent communication for an ES kid who drops two letter grades?

I am obviously upset with DS more than the teacher but I want to know what is far to expect from the teacher here.

Did the teacher enter grades in Synergy in a timely manner? If so, they discharged their duty. Cs are a passing grade. You as a parent should have seen the trend on ParentVUE and had a conversation with your child.

ES grades are mostly subjective and random. There is rarely a paper trail and it makes me believe they just make it up.

How dare you be upset with your 10 year old son before you even know what happened?

This is not meant to sound rude at all. But, you have access to ParentVUE where you can monitor and look at all of her grades. Is she missing assignments? Is she bombing quizzes? Do you have the information at your finger tips.

In ES they don't post grades at all. There is no paper trail. They don't list any assignments. The grade book is just blank. This is why I think the grades are made up.

Just schedule the parent teacher conference. In all of my years of being a parent and having kids this is what teachers tell you. You’re welcome to schedule a conference anytime with them. No need to wonder here.

Just a new poster chiming in that our ES teachers don't use grade book either, and we rarely get work home. It's frustrating for sure!
