Namely, other MCPS students. |
Correct. With the cost of college tuition so high more and more families are opting to stay in state. That means more competition for spots. And as other pointed out it’s the University of Maryland not Montgomery County so there are kids in other counties applying not to mention some from out of state. |
| Many families have also left MCPS for other school systems or private schools in the midst of the decline of MCPS. So while MCPS once had by far the most high performing students in the state, that is no longer the case, so we’re not seeing MCPS students dominate college admissions like they once did. |
How many is "many"? MCPS had 11,332 seniors in 2019-2020 and 11,798 seniors in 2022-2023. |
| The worry from guidance counselors is that UMD is giving too many slots to out of state students. Maybe for the increased revenue. |
there are only 100 spots open for CS transfers. It's going to be like a lottery. They have stated that students in L&S need to have a backup major. https://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/cs-lep-faq-effective-fall-2024 |
? that is completely the opposite of what is going on. Too many high stats kids from MCPS trying to get into UMDCP. |
How can we tell who is high states when 100+100 is the same on the transcript as 79.5+89.5? |
Your first hurdle to get into UMD is the competition within your student's high school. UMD typically admits 50% of the students from a particular high school that meets the criteria. Montgomery County typically has a large number of students who apply, but the school has to ensure they are admitting students from the entire state. |
There are more seniors today than 4 years ago but the increase has come from kids who aren’t going to be applying to umd. Largely English language learners and kids struggling to get through high school |
Please provide data to back up this claim. To see where admitted students are from it's worth reviewing this report. https://www.usmd.edu/IRIS/?view=UMCP |

Not true. DC was rejected and well up in the school scatter gram |
Check out the SAT scores and number of APs of some of the kids who got rejected. |
Naviance? What major were they applying to? CS ? |
| UMD claims not to look at major until after a decision made on admissions so not sure why anyone saying major is affecting admissions. |
