Your best path depends on whether you want to drop the low grade.

If the kid ended up with a C or worse, then I'd say re-taking it through MCPS would not only give a better foundation but also replace the grade. You can sign up for only one semester (precalc A) but you have to redo both quarters of the first semester.

if the kid ended up with A or B you're probably better off with the non-MCPS options people are referring to.

And I agree with PPs. It's mid year. If the kid struggled with first semester, you want to get started on the supplemental work now so that second semester goes better. At a minimum, Khan Academy (this is a great, free resource if the kid will do it).
