June 1 is the new May 1

Yeah, the FAFSA thing sucks for students who only use FAFSA. But the Dartmouths (etc.) get all they need from CSS, so it may not be an issue. (All they'd have to do is to promise to backstop Pell if that didn't come through as expected... and since they promise to meet demonstrated need, they already have made that commitment, so really not a big issue.)

We will have to wait and see what happens with the FAFSA mess. If students have their aid packages by early to mid April, they should be able to decide by May 1. Yeah, that's short, but it's not like they can't even think about their options before the aid package comes.

Does it mean that those waitlisted students will need to wait even longer ?! So sad ...

All waitlisted students, in any year, need to anticipate that acceptance off the WL is unlikely. Waitlisted students aren't actually waiting because the vast majority will never get good news from the school that waitlisted them.

At least deferrals know that they will hear something in March. Deferral may feel like a waitlist, but the two situations are very different.

this is what OP said pretty much exactly. but a 'backstop' from a private college is not the same as getting the actual data from Pell etc

My kid has gotten a few emails officially changing the date to June 1. Doesn't do much good unless it's all of them though.

We got note from Lewis and Clark. Moving to June 1. Not our first pick, but if it was and I was waiting on financials, I’d appreciate the time

CC has a thread with all the schools that have announced a June 1 deadline. I expect it will continue to grow.
