The majority of kids treat their laptops just fine. It’s always like two boys in the class, there seems to be a direct link to their level of cleanliness and maturity, to how their laptop is cared for. |
Oh? That's why the laptops that are not brand new are disasters? Just two kids are wrecking all of the older laptops? Or maybe regular Dell laptops are not suitable for the task and the entire 1-to-1 concept is poorly thought out. |
DD is on her 4th laptop this year. She is super careful with her electronics. The problems have been things like WiFi not working, laptop randomly crashing (in the middle of a test! That was fun), some sort of BIOS fault, etc. Each time, she traded it in for something that works. I think it's just a function of them being old, and some electronic devices having problems regardless of age. |

Last year, they did seem to hold people accountable for damaged and/or lost equipment at our ES. It seemed like a positive change. I think each charger is $20 if not turned in, and a laptop is in the high $100s if I remember correctly.
Maybe that helped a bit? |
| My fourth grader leaves it at school thank goodness. My seventh grader uses his every day |
I think the fact that they’re old and I’ve probably been cycled through anywhere from 2 to 4 students probably answers your question. But for the new computers, I would agree with the PP. The majority of promblems don’t happen until they’re older. |
| Colossal waste. They need to ask who needs a laptop. Instead, FCPS thinks it's freaking Oprah: "YOU get a laptop! YOU get a laptop!...." |
YOU should be the one teaching your kids to respect school property and treat it well. Too many parents have abdicated all responsibility for basic parenting then get upset when a teacher can’t raise 25 kids at the same time. |
| Depends on the grade. Kindergarteners have ipads, but they're kept at school and only used for certain things. |
Well, kids no longer use texbooks or notebooks. What do other counties do? Not sure why you are in the FCPS forum if you're not in Fairfax. |
| I would rather opt my ES age kids out of using laptops altogether. |
It’s easier for them to install and maintain software, updates, patches, etc. on FCPS owned laptops. |
The brokedick county where I went to school (where 3/5 of the school board thinks Covid was a hoax and Jan 6 was a false flag) has laptops for all. |
I agree, but then I also am a Luddite who believes in printed textbooks, teaching correct spelling & grammar, and teaching cursive handwriting. |
Laptops add distraction to the class. |
