Thoughts on Gettysburg?

There still is an Allegheny Review, and I think it's got a decent rep.

Right now we're actually torn between Wooster and Allegheny so I'd love to hear more insights about those too, if you don't mind me piggybacking into this thread.

My DD didn't apply to Allegheny but she was accepted to Wooster. Did your DD (you have a DD, correct) get the invite to meet the Wooster president in DC? It's an alumni event. Might that be a good event for her to attend so she can network with alum and talk to them about their experiences?

Thanks, that's a good idea!

Anyone know why Gettysburg has taken a tumble in USNWR? It was upper 40s/low 50s for a long time and now I see it's ranked 63. Graduation rates and incoming student scores have held steady. Is it the Pell Grant, social mobility crap dragging it down?

Why is Gettysburg so expensive?

Wooster gets my vote! I know a few people with kids currently there or recently graduated, and all speak so highly about the school. Definitely a diverse student body at Wooster and probably a better environment for artistic or quirky kids (it just seems like a place where the idea of belonging and self-discovery are really valued). Gettysburg much more homogenous and preppy/Greek.

Did OP say their kid was artistic or quirky? Is there some DCUM guide that elevates the quirky over the well-rounded or social?

My DS accepted at Allegheny, Gettysburg, and Dickinson. So this thread piqued my interest. Those in the know, grateful if you can help me think through Dickinson vs the other two. Wooster sounds interesting but he didn’t apply there.

Yeah. My son got his acceptance letter today from Gettysburg telling him he is getting some sort of scholarship worth $33K a year and I'm thinking "great!" but then saw that the annual all-in cost is $83K! $50K a year is no bargain. Ha! College is such a racket.

Just sharing what I observed from our visits and what close friends have shared about Wooster. OP can take it or leave it as it does or doesn’t apply to their own kid!

It feels like it. Every other post is someone trying to find a school with little to know Greek life or bashing a school for being "too fratty." They can suit themselves, but at a typical state school where 20% of the males are in frats, those 20% get 80% or more of the fine girlz. They also make lucrative connections, have higher GPAs than the campus average, and graduate at higher rates. But all you hear about on this forum is "toxic masculinity" and "bro culture." Yawn.

Gettysburg is a good safety college.

Our son graduated from Gettysburg College this Spring and we were very pleased with it. He got a good liberal arts education, made life-long friends, and graduated with a good job. I wouldn’t overlook it.

Attended Gettysburg, albeit 20+ years ago, but I get back fairly frequently. I loved my four years there. Great academics in a beautiful campus setting. Very strong majors in History, Poli Sci (my major), Business Mgmt and Econ. Sciences are solid too. I was in a frat and when I was there it was pretty preppy/sporty but it is far more diverse now. One of the most balanced of the LAC's, not too far left but also not conservative either. You can find your crew. I went on to a very successful career in Finance (even though I was a Poli Sci major). Great alumni network. As for the town, I found it to have everything a student would need (cheap bars, cute coffee shops, decent restaurants and the battlefields abut campus and are just amazing.
