All the statements from State are trying to be conservative because of the backlog this summer. But it seems clear the actual experience at this point is more like 3-5 weeks. I'll bet OP has the passports in hand by early February.

Yes, passport processing times dramatically improved compared to the nightmare last spring/summer. Just got a new passport (regular renewal, NOT expedited, regular mail) - took less than a month.

The State Department appears to have gotten their act together. Knock on wood.

I submitted renewal applications for two kids in late December at a post office appointment and had the new ones in less than 3 weeks, not expedited. I mailed my renewal the same day and my post office informed delivery info shows I should have it soon.

My husband sent in his renewal application on Dec 30. He had his new passport in hand Jan 15. Not expedited.

Same experience here in Fairfax for my two kids. They had their renewed passports mailed to us in 3 weeks.

Same here for three kids. It was shockingly fast.

Although I wonder if there was a major increase in early January for applications. It seems like the sort of thing a lot of people would say, "I'll take care of that after the holidays" and then a bunch of applications are received at the same time. That would explain a longer wait time now.

And if I do I'll make sure to update.

I submitted passport applications in late December (between Xmas and New Year's) and already got them back even though I said that we had no scheduled travel.

OP here. Today is 1/25. Her application is still "in process" with a 6-8 week window from date of receipt which was 1/16.

I took my kid to get a new passport 10 days ago, paid for expedited, and just got it today!! Shocked how fast we got it.

We renewed my DDs passport and it took maybe 3 weeks. It was very quick. They did tell us 6-8 weeks but it was much faster.

I wouldn’t totally go by this. I expedited my renewal, and it still showed up as in processing until the day I received it.

I also did passports for 2 of my kids (I know they all count as new for kids, but these were their 2nd and 3rd passports if that makes a diff) early December. I expedited them and they were at our door in 13 days!

Agency received my renewal on 1/24. The new passport is already being shipped to me.

Agency received DH's and my renewals on 1/26. We received the new passports exactly one week later, on 2/2. Expedited service. We got email notifications when they were received, in process, and shipped.

Now is a great time to renew passports!
