Random Q about Great British Baking Show

Sometimes I feel like the star baker and the decision who is sent home is not judged on the bakes of the week but on other factors (like, maybe someone had a bad couple of weeks and they just felt it was time to take them out of contention). But, it is one of my fave shows, still.

I agree, they seem to choose who to send home based on overall performance to date- but honestly that seems fair to me.

It was a shock! I don’t think the best person won - it was a disappointing!

Definitely didn’t think the best baker won this season, though I also thought the bakers as a group were weak this time around compared with last seasons. Possible Britain is running through its supply of good amateur bakers?

+1 -OP

How did your friend do?

He was in the final! Didn’t win. Season 4 or 5, I can’t remember which, but with Mel and Sue and Mary Berry.

I loved that person - I thought they really deserved the win. And I am LOVING Alison and Noel together - she is such a breath of fresh air.

I think it's a mix! How they did that one particular day - but also how that day's performance fits in with their performance as a whole. And if they are getting better, getting worse, showing virtuosity, etc. I don't mind that it's not each bake in isolation.

Agree about Alison and Noel. I always loved him, but she is so, so great to watch. None of the other pairing have even come close to these two.

This. It's also why some reality shows where they have drinks and they cups will be the kind where you can't see how much is in them, because of continuity.

I totally disagree 😂
But I think it proves my suspicion correct - that Matt wasn’t popular with the American audience, which is much larger than the British one now. I loved Matt, and also Sandi. Alison is just too much for me, and while she is very sweet with the bakers, she’s not funny at all.

I have wondered this, too! And sometimes they do have fresh clothes and sometimes they don't, but they talk about "tomorrow." How interesting that they wash their clothes for them!

I've noticed it too, and assumed it was so that they could splice scenes together in any order. It does also help keep track of who is who, in the early part of a season!

LOVE Alison. I like Sandi ok, disliked Matt.

I think they use overall performance as a kind of tiebreaker - if two people had a really bad weekend, they'll kick off the person who has been weaker overall. But the star baker seems to really be based on the single weekend IMO.

They make them wear the same clothes for continuity for viewers, so that it’s easier for viewers to recognise them and remember who is who, especially at the beginning. Clothes are washed on-site by the team after filming on Saturday.

Congrats to your friend- that’s a big deal! (Who was it?)

I really enjoyed Sandi - and thought she and Noel had a good thing together - but I LOATHED Matt. I think he brought out the absolute worst in Noel, and just wasn't fun. He made me really uncomfortable.

Yeah that might be an American thing! I guess he has more fans in the UK?

Sandi was good too. Matt Lucas can be a little hard to take. He's clever and often funny, but I just found his very frequent attempts at sexually-charged humor icky.

I think they should always include a female presenter. You get a much warmer, more supportive energy in the group that way along with the silliness.
