I felt a loud noise in Gaithersburg, MD. I felt my bedroom vibrating.

Doubt it’s related but our power just flickered.

Woke me straight out of bed at 12:50AM! Sounded like extended thunder in Damascus. Texted my Mom in Derwood and she confirmed the noise too. Knew at that point it was an earthquake before the posts began.

Also in Kensington - same thing. Heard it more than I felt it. Sounded like several CSX diesel locomotives all slowly rev’ing up their engines to get a big train moving. It built and got louder for about 10-12 seconds and then it just sorta faded out. Nothing in the house shook or rattled. It was just low, “powerful” noise.

Weird how it could be heard more than felt.

My experience in another state with frequent small earthquakes.. sometimes you saw and felt shaking.
Most days, with the small quakes, I just heard a loud “POP!”

I thought it was thunder. My only other earthquake experience was the 5.9 we had a few years back. Hope this one is a one off! Exciting start to 2024.
