New Year's Day Meals and Superstitions

I’m Italian and always have lentils and sausage on New Year’s Day. Actually I make it quite often- but always today.

Growing up, I remember a very beige meal comprised of pork roast, potatoes, and sauerkraut. Not that those aren’t components of a very delicious meal, but for whatever reason, the preparation seemed underwhelming.

New Years in our home consists of garlicky slow-roasted pork shoulder, crockpot black eyed peas to be served over steamed white rice (Hoppin John), and sautéed cabbage. I might make some corn bread or rolls-haven’t decided yet!

I love the idea of a new years day food tradition. As a child in Texas my grandmother did make black eyed peas a few times.

Today I basically did a fridge clean-out and sauteed some mushrooms, green onion, and a plum tomato, and added pasta with a block of boursin and some sun dried tomatoes. i liked the idea of cleaning things out to start fresh.

Hungarians eat lentils on New Year’s Day too, which is great because neither I nor my Texas-born husband like black eyed peas. I’ve got a pot of lentil soup simmering on the stove right now.
