Displaced rib fracture from Covid cough

Everyone, take paxlovid if you get covid. It basically zapped all my symptoms within 12 hours. But I took it very quickly after the onset of symptoms.

I called my pulmonologist and asked for Paxlovid yesterday because I tested positive for covid. He said it’s really only for people 65+ years old or who are immunocompromised. I have 4 other risk factors for severe covid, but not those two. He said he didn’t think I’d benefit from taking Paxlovid. Consider yourself lucky that you got a prescription.

My doctors adviced against it if you have other health issues.

Your doctor is a dangerous incompetent.

DP. My mother's wouldn't do it either. Part of the problem is that there's a very long list of common medications that are contraindicated with Paxlovid. So, you either need to suspend those medications, which is bad, or take anyway, which can also be bad.

Keep in mind Paxlovid is basically two drugs. There's the primary antiviral component that slows down replication of covid. The second drug is primarily used to slow down the body's metabolism of the first drug so it stays in your system longer.

The problem is, that second drug doesn't just effect Paxlovid. It affects a wide range of drugs that are metabolized in a similar way. So taking Paxlovid will significantly interact with many other drugs.

Thank you for this explanation.

When the President took it, he suspended his other medications. It's actually not uncommon to suspend medications when you have a more urgent issue that needs to be addressed.

Sorry that your doctor wouldn't prescribe it. If anyone runs into a similar situation, try googling paxlovid prescription and clicking on one of the ads for online doctors. You'll answer a bunch of questions to make sure you have no contraindications, maybe have to upload proof that you're covid positive, pay maybe $20-$40, and in about an hour, a prescription will be at the pharmacy of your choosing.

The US government returned about a third of the stockpile to Pfizer because not enough people are using it, so it's baffling that doctors continue to put up hurdles to people taking it. It can shorten the duration of symptoms and can prevent long covid so it's beneficial for many people.

Paxlovid was great at nixing covid when I had it this spring (I have asthma) but the rebound was no joke. Google Paxlovid rebound and you’ll see about 1 in 5 ppl who take it experience a covid rebound. I was so sick and it felt like it lasted forever.

I’m actually down with Covid right now and am opting to skip Paxlovid this time. Tho my symptoms aren’t as severe as they were in the spring.

Covid rebound also happens to people who don't take paxlovid:
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/covid-rebound-can-happen-even-without-paxlovid/

in "placebo-group subjects . . . 30 percent experienced at least two symptom-free days before one or more of their symptoms returned"

Dose changes or stoppage of medicines can be done, however, it requires careful management by the PCP. The scale of this issue is large - the FDA found that "greater than 50% of Paxlovid-eligible Medicare and VA patients were taking medications that were identified as having a drug-drug interaction with Paxlovid." Unfortunately, not all adverse drug interactions are avoided. "From an updated analysis cumulatively through October 4, 2023, FDA identified more than 400 cases of serious adverse events assessed as possibly or probably related to Paxlovid drug-drug interactions. ... Many of these cases reported hospitalization, and a fatal outcome was reported in a few cases." https://www.fda.gov/media/155052/download (page 6)

One reason that Paxlovid is not offered to standard risk patients is that Pfizer discontinued its trial for standard risk patients "due to low rate of hospitalization or death in the standard-risk population."
https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-reports-additional-data-paxlovidtm-supporting

"ritonavir-boosted nirmatrelvir [Paxlovid] did not reduce the duration of symptoms and did not have a statistically significant effect on the risk of hospitalization or death [in standard risk patients] compared to placebo, although the event rates were low."

The president gets far better health care than many of us do.
