I imagine NOVA car dealers will be quite pleased with the Governor’s proposal.

The car tax is not why we do that. The cost of the car tax does not enter my mind when selecting a car.

Not directly, no. The car tax on a luxury car amounts to a rounding error compared to other taxes on a 6 or 7 figure income. Instead, it’s the NOVA car culture — in a lot of NOVA communities, a person just looks out of place with a high-end luxury car. I don’t think it’s a leap to say that the car tax contributes to this culture.

It’s pretty much the only thing that enters my mind when thinking about buying a car. And it is why I son’t do it.

What is visionary about a purportedly anti-tax governor proposing to eliminate a state tax that few other states even have?
Anonymous
It is a local tax, though. You pay it to your local government. Which takes revenue from your locality, not the state.

That or do what other republicans do and blow up the debt and leave it for someone else to fix.

Oh any short fall will be made up on the backs of Nova tax payers. This is just some scheme to shift taxes to Nova. It’s not like we pay for everything already.

NoVa taxpayers will already be on the hook for the Caps and Wizards complex. This will drive the tax burden through the roof, relative to DC and MD.

Please baby Jesus get rid of the car tax. VA is taxed way too much and that's why they had a surplus the last few years and had to send money back to the taxpayers. This whole system is F'ed up and all the while we can't see the road when it's raining and dark because VDOT can't even bother with reflective paint and no one can repave of fix the pot holes. I can't wait to leave the state for good it's just too much.

Jim Gilmore tried this 20-odd years ago. It was kind of a mess.

Calling Youngkin a “visionary” for this is disingenuous since it was the centerpiece of gubernatorial campaigns in the past.

The issue is how do you replace the revenue for localities.

If anything it’s a tax conservatives should love since it taxes consumption. It’s basically an optional tax. Don’t want to pay it? Don’t own a car or own a cheap one.

Don't worry. MD has to pay for the Blueprint educational bill which will bankrupt the state if they go all in.

Sadly he can only serve one consecutive term. Good thing Winsome is waiting in the wings to keep the good fight going.

Hopefully Spanberger’s seat will turn red and it will be a win-win for the Republicans that election cycle.

i agree that some roads are very difficult to see any lines at night when it rains.

This tax sucks

Good I’d love if it was more fair. I pay about $7,000 in car tax a year. It’s insane.

Maybe (I really don't know of course) there is the realization that people aren't really buying new cars like they used to (given lack of inventory, that they are so expensive, and WFH folks are not driving as much) and there is the fear that relying on this type of tax revenue is not sustainable for the long term.

I'm about to replace my 2008 Honda and the car tax is definitely a factor in selecting my next car.
