Governor Youngkin's Visionary Step: Eliminating the Double Tax on Virginians' Vehicles

Anonymous
Here's your updated forum post with the inclusion of Governor Youngkin in the subject and a positive tone towards the tax change:

Governor Youngkin's Bold Move: Ending Virginia's Unfair Car Tax. Governor Youngkin's proposal to eliminate the unpopular and potentially unconstitutional car tax in Virginia, balancing it with a slight increase in state sales and use taxes, is a commendable step towards fairer taxation. This initiative not only relieves Virginians of the burden of double taxation on vehicles but also paves the way for a more equitable tax system across the state.

Good for him. May it be so.

If only he didn’t also want a 6 week abortion ban.

He will need to figure out where to capture other revenue for the state to make up for the shortfall, which likely would result in tax increases that would make it more obvious that VA isn't actually a lower tax state than DC or MD.

That or do what other republicans do and blow up the debt and leave it for someone else to fix.

This. Eliminating the tax is easy, making it revenue neutral is impossible.

Oh any short fall will be made up on the backs of Nova tax payers. This is just some scheme to shift taxes to Nova. It’s not like we pay for everything already.

Taxes are better than abortion

It's a tax with bad optics, but most people would wind up paying more if they shift the rate somewhere else. Also, if you don't have a car or have a junker, you pay just the registration fee. It actually is a progressive tax where rich people with fancy cars pay more.

It just pisses people off. But compare your entire tax bill for all purposes with the entire tax bill from other states, and Virginians do quite well.

Is this another bot? The titles are super long and extreme.

Actually, when you factor this in, Virginia is on par or higher than DC, and everyone derides DC as having super high taxes.

(this is factoring in property tax, income tax and "fees")

Go figure.

Drive through neighborhoods in NOVA consisting of $2-4M homes and you’ll see mostly Toyota Camrys and RAV4s, Honda Accords and CRVs, Suburu Imprezas and Foresters, Hyundai’s, Kia’s, and minivans. Drive through similar neighborhoods in DC and MD and you’ll see driveways full of luxury cars.

I imagine NOVA car dealers will be quite pleased with the Governor’s proposal.

The car tax is not why we do that. The cost of the car tax does not enter my mind when selecting a car.

Given similar vehicles, that might be the case. But Virginians are notorious for driving cheaper and older cars to minimize the amount of personal property tax they have to pay (Virginia provides a subsidy/credit so those with cars assessed at less than $20K pay minimal taxes). Visit rhe the parking lot at any Big Law firm in the DMV and you’ll see lots of cheaper cars with VA tags and lots of expensive cars with DC and MD tags.
